Re: How many folks pre-ordered WATM?

The fact that this release has a STUPID number of vinyl variants makes a preorder pretty dumb, but here I am.

Should have just done what I did with Marcus Mumford and order the vinyl on the Target app for pickup the morning it's released and saved $10 vs. WH, but whatever.

I can't seeing buying more than one edition of a vinyl record, unless you're playing some kind of investment game and think you can re-sell it down the line. Which is usually a losing proposition when something resurges as a fad. Everyone bemoans not taking better care of vinyl from the 60's/70's the same way our parents talked about how they used to have Babe Ruth and Mickey Mantle cards that they threw away as kids. So the new generation hoards the new version of The Thing thinking it'll be worth big bucks someday.

I have a collection of baseball cards from the 90's that aren't worth jack. lol

Because no one likes baseball. Pokémon cards are super duper.

That said, no one likes DMB either.

As Rick Harrison so eloquently put it “Anything made to be collectible is inherently not collectible.”

Makes me sad that I was once the first option, and today am decidedly the last option. They're just so, so bad now. The couple new songs I've heard are amongst the worst songs (not just DMB songs) I've ever heard. Why would I want to listen to a whole album of that, let alone pay for it.

It sounds like it's time to move on from DMB

This is crazy on a fansite of rabid fans, that just under half of those responding to this survey aren't going to pre order the new album. It's either the state of the music industry and buyer habits, or they just dropped the ball with marketing and bonus material on this. It's the least effort I've ever seen a band put into a major release. It just says we don't give an F, and you can buy it or not. We don't care.

I've preordered a lot of albums over the last few years. Not one has come with bonus albums.

But maybe Goose just doesn't care about their fans.

Which ones? Can you share a list? What was the decision for giving the artist essentially a loan up front for something you could just go buy on the day it comes out? What was the incentive? Because most pre orders don't get delivered on time anyways.

I don't care what other bands do, DMB has set their own precedent. Each album since Stand Up has had some kind of bonus disc with preorder.

Even preordering Busted Stuff let you stream a webcast of one of the 2002 shows.

Off the top of my head:

    DMB
    Nickelcreek
    Weezer
    Goose
    Clutch
    Metallica
    Wage War
    Genesis

    I'm sure there's more.

I'm not going to go out somewhere on release date to buy an album. Sometimes they come a few days early. Sometimes they come a few days late. Odds are I'm listening in the car via Apple Music when it first comes out anyway, and probably not getting to the vinyl for a while. As for a loan, I'm fine with them getting the money early. Sure, I'll lose out on that sweet, sweet 24 cents if I had just kept that money in savings, but I'm okay being out that interest. I don't need an incentive or prize. If I see an album I'd like to own a copy of, I'll order it when I see it, and it'll just show up. Some albums have digital downloads of singles. I've never once gone through the hassle of redeeming one of those, it's all on Apple Music already. I've never been upset because an album came out on Friday, but I didn't get a copy of it until Monday.

Good thing they broke that trend now, and won't have to worry about the expectations moving forward.

Buying more than one variant is nothing more than a waste of money, especially when you have so many that have no difference other than color (and one is 180g). It's stamp collecting if the stamps you were collecting only had value to you, I suppose.

    So far I've counted:

    1) Deluxe black 180g
    2) White variant
    3) Lavender variant
    4) Red variant (Target exclusive)
    5) Blue variant (Walmart exclusive)
    6) Green variant (Barnes and Noble exclusive)

5 of which are exactly the same except the color. Like...why? That's absurd.

What if people like to collect or display them? Is it any different than buying pins or posters or whatever else? Who cares if/why people buy them?

I preorder albums because I like just having them show up at my door.

None of the albums I order have special prizes to incentivize ordering. I still want to hear new Nickelcreek. So I order now. It shows up in a couple months and I don't think about it again.

My reasoning is buyer habits, for sure. I don't own a vinyl player and my car doesn't have a CD player. I'll stream the album when it comes out, but this will be the first DMB album where I don't own a physical copy because I don't have the means to play it.

I'm not sure why this is shocking to people. It's 2023.

Most people aren't listening to physical copies of music. Those that do aren't lining up for a midnight release at Waxie Maxie.

If you want a physical copy. It's there. If you don't, it's available where you want it.

And no one is "forcing" anyone to buy a physical copy they can't play or don't want in order to get a few live tracks. So this forum completely exploded.

Yeah it's very convenient to have vinyl delivered to my house rather than going to the store. I pre-order most of my albums this way and while I would prefer some incentive it won't stop me from preordering strictly out of convenience of delivery.

Yeah. I figure there are plenty of others in the same position as me. I'm still struggling with what to do with the binders full of music that I've accumulated up to this point in my life, especially the albums that aren't on streaming services and the old shows I acquired through b+ps or trading. It's hard to let them go, but I also don't really have a way to listen to them anymore beyond a DVD player.

Re: How many folks pre-ordered WATM?

1st time I preordered anything DMB related was on my 2nd or so WH membership (ended up skipping a year or two or 3 between memberships until 2016) in 2003 when I ordered the SD album, with the D&T bonus disc and the t-shirt for my wife.

Every edition since then has generally special in some way since then, but the only other preorder was CT by way of buying 2018 concert tix. The actual WH bonus material for CT was of no real interest to me. I did buy Rhino's Choice from Target, hoping that two of the rarer trax were from shows we hit, but once revealed they were the other one or two times the songs were played.

Most of their other albums were bought new within the 1st week of release, Crash & BTCS on release day, at a record store or music section of a Best Buy-like store.

Re: How many folks pre-ordered WATM?

I have pre ordered many DMB albums. Not always for extras, because there weren’t always extras (like most LTs). I mostly just wanted to support a band that I loved. But I’m not preordering this time around. Unsurprisingly, at some point along the almost three year journey of this thing, and then looking at the track list and songs times, I just feel like: that’s it? I’m just not excited about it and I feel like they’ll survive just fine without my dollars.

FYI, for anyone who is pre-ordering, Walmart and Amazon both have the best deals on the CD at least currently. $11.25, with free shipping. For me, Walmart is saying it'll be arriving by 5/20, Amazon says 5/23. I would imagine that you'd be able to just go into a Walmart on 5/19 and get it at the same price, unless they change it by that point. Also could consider other retailers that price match competitors (Target will price match both Amazon and Walmart.)

And yes, I realize this is only a couple $$ of savings, but...well, I can admit that I'm cheap.

I do applaud the bravery from some of you.
    Physical media forever.

Thanks for the heads up! There's no shame is saving money. Also, definitely no reason to order from MusicToday unless someone is also ordering a WATM pullover hoodie for the end of May.
