I think he’s playing it more edgy this year (and stronger overall) vs ‘18-21. Take a listen to it at Hartford this year, he was doing some really powerful stuff with Jeff.

So yes maybe less busy compared to the last decade and some, but take a listen further back (I’m a drummer btw)
I listened to some 2021 version and then Listener Supported. I couldn't really tell you how his playing has changed on it over the last 20 years. LS is kind of the live version that I draw from.

And I mean, it's not just Carter, the band obviously just sounds way better in 1999-- the overall performance isn't the same.

Also, what guitar is Dave playing now? Sounds kinda thin to me, I don't think I dig it.

I would say I’m the exact opposite as OP. I love Pig, but I’d be cool if they never played it live again. Nancies on the other hand is finally interesting again. One of my favorite tunes, but I feel from 07-16 it wasn’t as special as it was in the earlier days. I dig the new format and solo choices.
It’s funny you mention those years specifically because I think the 08 alpine opener is one of the best nancies of all time

I have caught the tour debut of The Stone back to back years (typically not that lucky) and it sounds great. Miss the real violin but it to me is still a top tier performance

I actually enjoy LIOG with Tim taking the solo in the middle vs what boyd used to do. What’s about it that feels lacking?

They're all worse, and it's not OK. The sound needs to change, or they just need to stop. I don't listen to them anymore, unless it is something older.

I tens to agree that the Timmy solo in graves in superior to what boyd was doing for years…..is this an issue where folks don’t like buddy using synth patches that mimic violin sounds?

I was at the Deer Creek show this summer that DID NOT have Timmy. I thought it was a major improvement. The songs had more space to breath and could hear more of Buddy and Stefan. Timmy over powers the songs, uses too much distortion, and plays same fills over and over (wasn't always this way).

Aside from Everyday which they don't play often I can't think of many songs that haven't improved over the last couple years, to me this lineup keeps playing better together. They'll never be early DMB, or '98-'04, or '09-'16, all of which had variation with sound and members. From '18 to now I see a lot of improvement in their playing, summer tour setlists could be more consistent, fall tour was awful overall, but that's a different topic.

Definitely a nice change of pace when I went to those shows as well as I only have seen DMB live in the post roi era. I will say there was definitely a missed opportunity not having Jeff solo on that #41 from deer creek even though I enjoy Jow Lawlor playing in that song.
