There’s a lot I like about it, such as the intro, the orch, Tim’s fills, some good dynamics, etc. but overall it sounds muddy to me and not a polished mix. Lots of times it sounds like a big chunk of mid/low end sound and it’s hard to point out instruments I’m hearing no matter how close I listen. Not the best panning ? Yes, I am so glad you brought it up. It’s been bothering me ever since I listened to it. It’s very muddy and flat. I hear some dynamics but not enough, especially for a track that isn’t conforming to the loudness wars. If you compare the mix and master to Come Tomorrow and Big Whiskey they are all louder and more clear with shiny high end and the instruments stand out more.
I actually do like a lot about this mix - if you listen on really nice speakers or over the ear headphones there is some nice stuff to pick out, and I love the mixing for the riffs, but I’m also very disappointed in it at the same time. I’m legitimately confused. If I listen to it itself I can forget about it, but when a new song comes on I can just see the difference in quality and it’s a little strange.
I completely doubt it but I am praying they mess with the mix and master and sub it out before it releases.
It’s such a monster song, and I love it, but I’m just so confused about the short track lengths for the album as a whole, and now this questionable mix and master.
I’m hoping the full album has a lot of nice surprises or nice arrangements and comes alive all together.
I’m usually more optimistic and excited than a lot of people here, but even I am scratching my head.
