It definitely SHOULDN'T be an unpopular opinion. JTR is excellent.

OK, I see it was addressed.

A lot of people on Ants don't like the band, the majority of its musical output, or its members really at all. Strange. I don't listen to bands I don't like or no longer like...

    See ya.

And we get the occasional appearance of someone who makes the point of telling us they’re no longer hardcores but they still feel the need to drop in and post something.

Sorry, I though you were saying that I did that. I love the band while also severely disliking certain albums or songs and not enjoying whole eras of the band, but we listen to them just about everyday (here's the historical listening breakdown: '94 to '03 practically daily, 2004 - 2010 every coupla weeks, 2011 to present practically daily again. There's just so much other great music that space needs to be made.

I'm also on board with their perspectives on global, social, and political issues, while understanding that not all of their fans agree with said perspectives.
That said, the guys in the band are regular people and not exempt from bad or overreactive moments and I don't think them shitty, entitled, or out of touch because of those moments...while reserving the right to call them out on their bullshit (my perspective).

Sorry again, also for the above rant. I'm glad for the music that they've created (and fortunately I like the vast majority of it) and they're still a great live band (even though they definitely sound different) AND that they're still creating new music (not all of which I expect to love or even like...cuz I don't). And most of these perspective have wavering to no popularity on these boards, which is fine.

    Cheers.

PNP > Rapunzel is a weak set/encore closer. Should only be played as an opener (not sure why it hasn't been more often recently) and mid-set.

Say goodbye is my only skip song from the big three. I've never liked it. Musically Carter and Roi are phenomenal, I've just always found the lyrics to be scummy.
I definitely agree with above about rapunzel. It's a song that makes a great opener or mid set but I hate to see it close or in the encore.

I don't hate Stand Up songs. It is definitely my least favorite album of theirs, but I circle back to it maybe once a year. I still enjoy American Baby, Stolen Away, etc. I can't stand Hunger though, and wish they just ended the album after Steady As We Go.

I agree on the first two. I used to really like SDL but heard it one too many times and got it placed poorly in a few too many sets. It's not a bad song I just have SDL fatigue.

I think Stephen Harris's production on Busted Stuff has aged better than Lillywhite's on Under the Table and Dreaming and Crash overall

I think BS has aged really well due to the sparse but precise production. Really sounds like 5 friends in a room playing live. Agree with UTTAD as well. I have trouble going back to it sometimes because it sounds so dated to the early 90s.

Disagree on Crash though. I think it not only holds up well, but has aged extremly well. I find myself going back to it more and more. To me it's the perfect balance of live DMB brimming with energy/passion (DIDO, Billies, LIOG, 41 in particular) and studio refinement. Genuinely curious, why do you think Crash hasn't aged that well?

It's not as egregious as Under the Table but it just doesn't sound clean to me anymore, especially in comparison to Busted Stuff. Crash seems disjointed in the same way Away From the World feels disjointed. I think my problem is like what you said, it's a mix of live DMB and studio refinement, I like studio DMB to sound like they're in a studio. If that makes sense.

Totally jumping in here, but I always liked Crash because I felt the songs actually carried some energy like the songs do live (except Tripping Billies), unlike UTTAD. Ants, Warehouse, Dancing Nancies, Rhyme and Reason, and Jimi Thing just didn't work well on the album IMO. Although I loved BOWA, Typical, WWYS, #34 and Pay For What You Get.

Full disclosure though, I heard Red Rocks before UTTAD, so I feel like that played into it a bit for me.

I've always thought Two Step, Two Much, DIDO, #41, LIOG, Cry Freedom, Crash, Say Goodbye all sound fantastic on the album. Not arguing, just throwing in my opinion.

    I appreciate the conversation

I like studio DMB to sound glossy.

There’s tons of songs that sound better without Boyd and with Buddy. Say Goodbye, Typical Situation, Raven, Bartender, Fool To Think to name a few.

Do you mean at their peak (*whatever year/version of DMB you consider the peak of that song), or currently?

I love Grey Street, think the full 3 verse version is one of the band's best songs, and certainly the 2000-2002 versions are amazing... but even Ants w/o Boyd I'd rather have than Grey St. currently.
