Re: YMDT Appreciation Thread

They play the fuck out of this song now, I love it. I wish they would just road test songs and play them out n see what happens instead of going to a studio with a producer. It seems like their fortay is figuring out what works on the road. I LOVE THIS BAND fuck the prodicers though

    Re: YMDT Appreciation Thread

I know I may be in the minority on this, but when Dave moved away from the lyrical build-up outro on YMDT from Piedmont in '07 to the scat outro, I was pretty bummed in the direction he took. While the scatting was good, and even great at times (see Live in New York), it just never had the same time of intensity that a lyrical delivery. Fast forward to this year, and while listening to the WPB N1 SiriusXM stream, I was absolutely blown away that Dave has started to move back to a lyrical build up in the outro. In fact this version takes the best of both worlds and c o m b i n e s lyrics with scatting. Amazing to watch this song evolve over the last 10 years, and couldn't be more thrilled with where it's landed now.

Great bump! I've always loved this song, but damned if I know how it crept its way into a Top 10 jam for me. It just keeps getting better and better!

This is one of my favorite DMB songs since I started the obsession. From this tour, my favorite outro is :
    Deer Creek 7/7 : https://youtu.be/zQ2ya329cqY?t=58m32s
It's less scatting, more of a slower approach, haven't heard this in other versions.

I was so disappointed we didn't get a YMDT in one of the Live streams :/

This is one of those songs that a lot of people hate on, that I dig. I think it's better than any song on Everyday.

Wow...I love it. So much more of an emotional impact when there's meaning behind the vocal delivery in that outro. God damn that's good.

And we did get a YMDT in one of the live streams! WPB N1. Check out the SiriusXM thread for the rip by TurboGPT! Its a true blend of lyrics/scatting in the outro with the usual tempo. Very solid.

With live stream I meant the youtube shows Camden or SPAC. I like to see and hear my favorites in audio&video . But yes, I like to WPB version as well !

How about this one. I filmed it myself during the Dave & Tim show in Amsterdam March 2017.

I have always been a fan of this song, but it could use a time-out. The scat outro became a turnoff, as I preferred something more coherent. It was a lot better when he sang real lyrics, so I'll have to give that DC version a listen.

I tend to skip this one a lot when playing CD's/Tapes, but I love hearing it live. Lyrics or scat (auction caller) outro, don't care. It's a great live tune.

Love the song and always have - i tend to love songs that tend to be a badass opener, and this is one of them just like The Stone. Now, i'm not saying this is as good as The Stone, but I enjoy the guitar riffs (stone-ish like) and then the scat at the end is fucking bonkers. How people don't like this song when dave is howling his scat and the horns come in is beyond me - fucking sociopaths out there thats how

I've always loved this song, even the studio version, and live it's even better. I get that it being overplayed can get old, however: most bands will play a handful of new songs on the tour supporting an album. Hell, a lot of bands play the same set list the whole tour. With many DMB fans attending multiple shows per tour, I can see not wanting to hear it every show you go to, especially considering the depth of their catalog. But...what if it's a song the band just loves/loved to play? I'm sure every band has songs they prefer to play. I don't know if anyone in the band has ever commented on YMDT, but if they love to (over)play it, I'm fine with it.

Also not sure why the very first post asks to not rain on the parade, but a bunch of assholes did exactly that.

Bad studio version (well, same can be said for many Stand Up tunes), but always enjoyed it live. Tim rejoining the band in 08 helped push the energy/jam to new heights, and I always welcome it at a show. The last 4 minutes I'd say (the main jam) and as others have said, the last two minutes or so, propel the song to one of the band's best live songs with the current iteration of the band.

For me, it's probably a top-40 live song I want to hear at a show. I only go to 1-2 shows a year, so I'll always be glad to see it pop up, pretty much any position except maybe show closer.

Note: I'm not saying it's necessarily a top 40 song in the band's catalogue in terms of "their best songs written" and again, def not studio-wise... but I love the song live and so I think it's prob top 40 for me at a show.

I dig YMDT. It sure has come a long way. I remember those brutal 05 versions. I think it works best to pick the energy back up after a quieter jam mid-set. Not crazy about it in the power slots.

Definitely is, it's a fun live song but I agree it's not a good "power slot" song like Duke stated

There was one about a year and a half earlier, and maybe 20 miles north, that I'm partial to.

I really do think it's better. I'll have to listen to yours again though.

I think it works great as an opener or as a main set closer. It’s a weak encore closer, though.

Also, the scatting/improv lyric outros are better than the yelling outros, IMO. See SPAC 2009 or Jacksonville 2014 for awesome improv outros.

Do any of you guys recall the era of the live version of YMDT they played where Carter would go ape shit the entire song and do doubles on the bass drum throughout?

I can’t seem to find it. I feel like it was early on in the song’s live play. Carter was a beast on it.
