    This thread sucks.

Is Carter Beauford a great drummer? Yes
Is he one of the best drummers of all time? Probably not
Is he better now than he used? I dunno, maybe. Past or present, both are great with me
Is Carter Beauford's drumming a good fit with this band? Absolutely
Is Dave Matthews as good a guitar player as John Mayer? No
Is Dave's song writing ability better? Depends on preference. For me, yes, by a lot.

    My $0.02 thrown in.

I think John Mayer would laugh at you if you told him he was a better songwriter than Dave.

    Well put.

Rolling stone lists make me LOL. It's like citing wikipedia for a school report. Not good.

One poster in this thread hit the nail on the head. Carter had some rough years around 05-07 and it was visible in both his face (pain) and in his execution - solid but none of the speed.

That said you're comparing two different Carters. Carter pre-03/04 is different than Carter post.

Rolling Stone isnt any better than radio stations playing what they are paid to put into rotation. They are a joke.

I think once you get to the skill level of someone like Carter Beuford it's an opinion who is the best ever. I truly think carter is because of the way he plays. are there other people who are also deserving of this title? probably, bu my opinion as a musician is carter beuford is the best kit player ever.

    Re: Carter Beauford

Only my 2-cents: I remember the show I attended in September and recall thinking to myself......he's still got it. Nothing newsbreaking there, BUT, I do have a good bit of experience in drum/percussion music having been extensively involved in "band" growing up and marching drumlines and fiddled with a kit here and there. The way I find Carter's work different (and thereby "better" to me) than some of his peers is that he's works in a lot of rudiments into his kit style that makes his drumming far more technical than most. Sure lots of guys can bash hard, fast and make lots of noise......cue Lars Ulrich and other historically-metal drummers but my background in rudimental studies gives me, personally, a far greater appreciation for what carter does show after show after show. I've seen Danny Carey live w/ Tool and he's probably my second favorite for similar reasons, both studio tunes and his live performance are very technical, as with Carter. Neil w/ Rush right up there with them, but a lot of those others.......The Police, etc. give me a break, no where near these other three.

Carter's ability to use his entire kit with ridiculous add-in touches and a true "percussionist" practice of using all his little gizzmo's as he accompanies Dave on lighter tunes (see Loving Wings, #40, etc.) are the mark of a true master of his craft, not just a "drummer" of which there are countless posers around the world. As far as his progression or digression, I really love Carter's work on the big whiskey tunes and how they've translated live, if you listen closely there's a ton of off-beat fills and notes much as he's made a habit of over the years. I admittedly know nothing about guitars or any other stringed instrument but drums I like to think I can talk-shop with folks. again, just my 2 pennies.

He might be a better soloist now, but as far as fills and small subtleties go, he was at his best from 99-00. Hardly much of a difference though, like I said, I think he's a better soloist overall now.

He's better now than ever both live and in the studio. He is "the captain" as Stefan puts in, and with Big Whiskey they basically put live Carter onto CD for the first time. I have seen this band 65 times since 1999 and any notion that he has declined in any way is not based in fact because there is not a shred of evidence to support that claim. He is as fast and as active as ever and with the band's sound getting more muscular by the year, they depend on him more than ever. Long live Carter!

Hi y'all. My favourite drummer in the world is Carter, and ever since I heard him first he has been. However.

I know i'll probably get shot down for this, but I prefer Carter's earlier style...

I think the way his kit sounds for a start, I preferred his older snare sound (sharper and cleaner - no idea what snare he used though...), I think possibly the way he plays as well is less creative now. He is the most creative drummer I have ever heard, don't get me wrong, but I preferred his older more unique freshness.
For example I heard Two Step in 2009, and wasn't really impressed with his solo, it was more flashy than creative, and he did the same thing the next night. And the next. Whilst it can't be his #1 hobby to make new solos for every gig, I think it'd be cool if we saw that creativeness coming back (in the solos) that I would argue he has had for years and years.

Also just the extra subtleties that he used to play with that I appreciate, I feel, have decreased somewhat. I think he hasn't lost anything, it's obviously all still in there; he has skill out of this world, but it'd be sweet to see him playing it again

    My two penneth.

    Now, shoot!

It is an irrelevant argument because there are too many characteristics to base it on.

Do we do it on speed? If so, what type of speed? Singles? Doubles? Rudiments? Which rudiments? Hands or feet?

Do we base it on styles played? If so, which one? How does one person's Rock compare to anothers Samba? Do we include the Nanego? Mozambique? Insert other style here?

Do we base it on recordings or grooves? How does Carter stack up against Porcaro's Rosanna groove? Or Gadd's 50 ways? Or Bozzio or Colaiuta's polyrhythm assault on the barlines with Zappa?

We have the double paraddidle basis for the DIDO groove.

    ...and...?

I don't see Carter playing much in the way of the original 26, 40 or Swiss Rudiments beyond what others do.

The Police, etc. give me a break, no where near these other three.
Stewart Copeland's abilities transcend beyond the kit into pitched percussion, as he demonstrated on The Police reunion tour. Additionally, he has composed numerous movie scores and even an opera I believe. That said, Stewart's greatest choice was his choice to let much of The Police material breathe.

This we can agree on. It's more about touch and taste than notes.

    Re: Carter Beauford

Carter was faster back in the day, that's about it.
His syncopation and rhythm has gotten better throughout his career and he's overall a better drummer because of it.
    Just my .02

EDIT - Copeland is amazing. He is not out of place on any "best of" drummers list.
