Cannot praise this film enough. I’ve watched it several times now. WATCH IT!!! Possibly the best shot, presented, edited & important doc I’ve seen ever.

Watching Apollo 11 now. That era of space travel means so much to me because my grandfather was a NASA engineer in the early days of the organization. It will always and forever blow my mind how they did what they did using 1960s technology.

I was just texting my mom about Apollo 11 being on, it was her father who worked for NASA. Here’s what she said:

“Absolutely incredible feat of science ... and luck! I still remember that day. We were all in La Jolla, CA on a month-long vacation courtesy of NASA because dad was doing work there. He negotiated we would come, too. Stayed in a hotel the month along with other NASA families from around the country. We all jumped out of the pool and headed indoors to the TV to watch!”

One of my greatest sources of pride is knowing my grandfather had a hand, however small, in putting man on the moon. He worked in the nuclear propulsion division, so he was part of the team who developed the propellant to get the astronauts into space. A literal rocket scientist. One of the greatest men I’ll ever know.

Here's a more detailed write up on my grandfather's work at NASA that was written after he died in 2012.

    Toy Story 4 - 9/10
Really well done and kept me emotionally invested. A good way to hopefully end this series in this iteration (I know they’ll be coming for another movie in a few more years).

    Bohemian Rhapsody - 6.5/10
    Good.

    Rocketman- 7/10
Went in not knowing anything about what to expect. Very confused when it was a musical. But it was fun and neat, and the acting was well done.

Apollo 11 was spectacular. That footage was just...wow!

Does that movie count on our end of the year rankings?

It should count. It had a theatrical run earlier this year.

Currently my #1 film of the year

Apparently it was a sight to behold in IMAX. I meant to get there and watch it, but it only had a one week run at the IMAX theater closest to me.

Our lists aren't limited to theatrical releases, though. All that matters is that it wasn't widely available prior to January 1, 2019.

Toy Story 4 -- family movie on this incredibly rainy RI day. Loved it...probably my favorite of the series.

For those that saw Toy Story 4, is it legit sad? I ask because my five year old is pretty sensitive and can get emotional easily, it also doesn't help that we just had to put our dog down over the weekend and it's already pretty sad over here as well.

I legit teared up twice...sorta crying without the heaving and sadness. But it’s arguably a good sad. Don’t want to get into anything more as it would be spoilers...

    The Dead Don’t Die

If purely judging from a humor perspective, I thought this movie was hilarious. I consistently belly laughed throughout. But I also get the less than stellar reviews after letting it sit over the night. It is heavy handed in its message, and the script is a bit messy (The kid characters in Juvi are totally pointless, for example). Overall, I definitely enjoyed it on the most surface level and the dry humor was something I really needed - not sure I’ll ever go back to it though.

The Belcourt is doing a month long retrospective of the year 1969. Apollo 11 is the last one they’ll be showing near the end of July, so I am going to sit on not seeing it until then.

Of all the movies about down-on-their-luck country singers, Wild Rose might be the best one I've ever seen.

If there's any justice, Jessie Buckley will sweep everything come awards season. But considering it's not a biopic, she'll be lucky to even sniff a nomination.

Yesterday. Wife and I really enjoyed it, I think the critics got it wrong. It won’t win any awards but it was very enjoyable and a solid feel good movie.

I will say it’s worth continuing the series despite your seemingly ambivalent feelings toward the first one. I think the world building they continue to do in the sequels is pretty strong, and the action scenes become an absolute marvel, especially in the third one.
