I've been through this one 3 times now. Helluva release. LOVE IT.

Wild, but Satellite sounds amazing on this one. Great jams all around, so much unique stuff crammed into 1 show. Perfection in picking it from those involved.

I knew this was going to be a special release. This is what a Live Trax is all about. A show like this is what made you instantly fall in love with this band back in the day.

Also, goes to show the strength of this bands live show. The fact a relatively new band on the scene that has one album released a year prior can walk on stage and open with a song half the crowd at the time has probably never heard, which has no set lyrics, and proceed to do this 5 or 6 more times in the same night is pretty impressive.

I was thinking the same thing. A rando going to that show had probably only heard Satellite, Ants Marching and What Would You Say at best. It IS filled with 8 songs off the album in stores (Not sure how hot or available R2T was then).

And then the encore...which had some experimental stuff to open it, a solo version of a deep track from their album and then...Halloween which...how many people knew what that was to end the entire show? If you were somebody checking them out for the first time because you heard them on the radio or bought Under The Table and Dreaming, you probably thought they were holding back What Would You Say for the closer.

But, seeing that level of performance and excitement from the band about it all in person clearly wins a person over no matter what they are playing.

I listened to this again over the last 2 days. What an absolutely terrific release. Great mix/master and awesome performances. Top shelf DMB right here. Very happy we got this one!

It's such a travesty that this wonderful sounding show wasn't selected for vinyl and instead we got the brutally mixed, raw sounding Deer Creek 2000 show.

People plead for ‘98-‘04 shows when something like LT61 is announced, and they still find things to complain about talking about a ‘00 show.

Someone uploaded it to the DR without looking at the formatting of all the other ones which is pretty cringe, but solely from a dynamic range standpoint the Live Trax series has been mastered with very little slam from about 2010 onwards.

Shame we can't say the same about the studio releases lol.

I don't think Dave cares too much about the Bama Rags releases and lets management get on with their thing, and they care about dynamics.

As Mark Batson has said before when asked about the compression, "Dave likes it loud, sorry".

As for those in the industry, a lot of artists think that's how it will sound good and the mastering engineers for the most part can't afford to fight it or waste the energy trying to educate them. We just have to be grateful for artists that are doing it right - the new Porcupine Tree record for example, sounds fantastic!

And of course, we enjoy all those CDs from the late 80s and early 90s before it went to shit around '95 with What's The Story.

Live Trax Vol. 60: 8.20.95 - Cincinnati Music Hall

    Very interesting topic, as usual.
At the end, the conclusion might be that a band should do what they are good to (playing) and let the engineers to get the best out of their recordings.
