Re: Bottom line? F$@% the trumpet

Man this websites discussion forum used to have interesting points of view. Those people must have moved on and I guess I have too as i now only occasionally check in. I'm almost always disappointed by the shallow criticisms. Feels like it just needs to die and be replaced by the ticket forum.

Hasn't Twitter and Reddit essentially replaced the need for this forum?

Most of these negative opinions have no merit. I hope the band doesn't listen or value the loudest in this community.

Cry a river, snowflake. If your head is so far up your ass that you need a disertation on why that shitty trumpet ruins DMB then you're completely useless.

For someone tossing the term "snowflake" around you seemed to be quite triggered by his comment. Not everyone has the same opinion as you, get over it.

When the trumpet came along the horn part became a horn section. Huge difference. Smooth free flowing improv turned into canned sheet music parts. Solos went from having an abundance of time and space within the music to who can get to their spot the fastest and the loudest.

Rashawn is mega talented, nobody is denying that. But he doesn’t make the band sound better. The band is so predictable musicwise now and they started down that path once Rashawn joined and they had to find a way to join him with Roi.

Man I wish Jeff would play free with no restrictions. The canned horns and lack of Jeff is some of the most frustrating part of the current sound for me. When Jeff gets to play a solo on his own it’s so damn good. See Lover, The Stone, YNK and Say Bye.

I'm ambivalent about Mr. Ross. I certainly don't hate him, but I have no need for trumpet in DMB. He's there and I'm used to it.

I'd rather Jeff get all of the solos coming out of metal tubes.

I do with Jeff had more freedom to add stuff here and there like Roi did. I could always use more Jeff.

Which songs to people wish Jeff soloed on instead of RR? Even if RR wasn't there, Jeff is a very different player than Roi was and probably wouldn't weave in and out the same way. Roi made love to his sax, Jeff fucks the shit out of it. I don't think losing RR would really change Jeff's playing style at all.

I was a fan of Jeff's before he was in DMB. His style is very different from Roi's and I embrace not having someone cop Roi's vibe. As such, ANY solo that RR is currently taking in ANY song I would gladly have Jeff take.

While I pretty much agree with everything when Jeff was able to let loose starting in 08 a lot of people couldn’t stand it. Maybe it was his style or maybe it was too soon without Roi but fans on this board were not happy.

I disagree completely. He and Jeff start with a very mellow style for the first 2-3 mins, and then build up to a very cathartic free-jazzish crescendo. For the style of jazz they are playing, its brilliant. There is the occasional thing that RR will play that I don't like, but the intro to Seek Up is definitely not one of them.

I do think that he and Jeff are able to play off each other better when Jeff is on soprano. I think those sounds blend a little better. I'm firmly in the "glad that RR and his trumpet are in the band".

Re: Bottom line? F$@% the trumpet

The only Rashawn parts that bug me are:

    - OSW intro should be sax only, and Jeff should play it more smoothly / less staccato like Roi used to (see: Piedmont Park)
On that release Rashawn still plays but comes in after Roi’s 3 solo notes and it sounds perfect

    - Rhyme and Reason horn part - only because Rashawn mirrors Jeff and doesn’t play Boyd’s missing harmony

I’d prefer a sax solo over a trumpet solo any day, but that’s nothing against Rashawn by any means... I just prefer the sound of a saxophone over a trumpet. Similarly, Tim has the potential to be great during most solos, but I’d still prefer to hear a violin solo over a guitar solo even if Boyd’s solos are less technically challenging to play.

I do think having a solo sax player is more conducive to improv, but I think more that it’s Jeff’s style and less Rashawn having anything to do with it... I mean Rashawn was there with Leroi and things didn’t really change. Rashawn is very musically talented and I appreciate his contributions in a lot of places.

And to all of you sharing videos of squealing, I think they are very jazzy and appropriate for the music. I enjoy them.

Dude has been in this band for a decade. It's possible for opinions on his role to change over time, because, you know, his role has changed over time. Crazy.

Not that there was ever any sort of consensus to begin with though. There were plenty of us in his early days who defended him.

Did anyone see Ross at Alpine last night during ASTB? I mean, he's very good at sucking the energy right out of the music.

    Here it is..
    https://www.periscope.tv/TshumpDMB/1YqGojrXZolKv

10:50 - 10:54'ish - If he could keep this going, it would be awesome

10:57- 11:05 - time to squeal.. what he's doing is actually technical and cool, but so redundant. It's like his 'go 2' move in every jam, gets tiring to hear it in every song

11:06 - 'I'm out of ideas' energy & jam dies. Literally noticeable by him, Jeff, and the crowd. He can't fill the sound! God it's bad. It's even more frustrating when Dave builds up the crowd & band with energy, hands over the slot, and Rashawn just takes a dump right in it.

For the record, I played trumpet for years and love the instrument. Also love jazz, but Rashawn, no, he can't carry the music, he just randomly plays things.. there is no build up, etc. There has been, in a few exceptions like Break Free Fenway.
