I wish they would do that again.
It was a gimmick album with no substance.

    You've got to be joking.

If anything it had infinite more substance than any normal studio album effort. For any band.

Sonic highways told history. With the collaborations, it WAS history.

Agree. You could argue that it may have been gimmicky but all of those songs are ripe with substance and meaning. That said, I only like 3 or 4 of the songs off that album.

I like the show, but the Sonic Highways album feels like a bonus disc you get when you buy the series on blu-ray.

i could see that. but it's noteworthy to realize that these songs were written and mastered in less than one week.

    that's fucking insane.

the backstory and production value of it all makes it my favorite FOO album hands down.

saint cecilia is also a favorite of mine, for similar reasons. i just admire the seat of the pants, "let's fucking do this" aspect of St. Cecilia.

also, a really bad ass hotel. too rich for my blood but that's where most bands stay when visiting Austin just because of how small and secluded it is. bands have been known to stay there for a week and travel by bus to their shows in Houston and Dallas using St. Cecilia as home base. that's interesting as each are easily a three hour drive per leg.

    That is pretty crazy.

I think that's why all the songs sound like generic, by-the-numbers FF to me.

I love the concept, though. The concept is neat.

recorded and mastered on multitrack ANALOG as well.

    that's unheard of.

I enjoy Sonic Highways but don't consider it a great album. There's some good tracks and the others are mediocre. Too many of them felt like them were trying to adapt to the influences rather than right a good song

Like pretty much all of the digital versions of Foo Fighters albums, it's brickwall mastered within an inch of it's life. Loud as hell and muddy sounding.

If you do vinyl, the vinyl version does sound better. It's not an amazing, reference level release or anything, but noticeably better than the CD/streaming version. Chris Bellman cut the lacquer for the vinyl, however the master is the the same as the digital version. (Would have been better had he actually done a separate master for vinyl.)

DR Database seems to back this up as it shows a DR8 for the digital versions and a DR10 for the vinyl. Again not a massive improvement, but noticeable if you're playing it on decent equipment.

I will say it's a bit better than Wasting Light (sonically, not song-wise) which is nearly unlistenable on CD/digital at a DR5, an absolute mess. the 2x45 vinyl of Wasting Light is eons better than the CD on that one. Still a digital master but is massively better than the CD/streaming version, very dynamic and crankable.

Really enjoyed my first time seeing these guys in Gboro a few weeks back. They ripped through quite a few songs in the span of a little over 2hrs+. Was hoping to hear La Dee Da live though. That, Run and Arrows are my favorite of the new ones.

Did anyone see the Struts open up for FF? They were pretty good. Glamrock pop with a lot of energy. Lead singer has a great voice, but if he keeps doing what he's doing live his voice will be shot in a few years

Dave Grohl always seems to be up to interesting projects. His new video for the song "Play" has 7 Dave Grohls playing a 22 minute instrumental song. It's a pretty cool video.

Just bought a ticket to their show Saturday in St. Louis. My wife is going out of town and I didn't want to stay at home bored so I figured I'd take a little road trip to see them one more time this tour.

Saw them in STL last night and I really think I'm gonna try to make the Friday night gig now. Hella expensive but to see Foo in a club when they're selling out arenas is too good to miss. I'm already going to be in NOLA that weekend for Fleetwood Mac on Saturday and had planned to go down Friday anyway.

Only difficulty will be finding tickets on the secondary market.

Re: ****Official Foo Fighters Appreciation Thread****

Just posted this in Covid thread too - if it's only allowed to be in 1 place, please leave it there and erase this one. I was more posting because the Club's Vax check process was best I've seen so far, but thought Foo fans might also appreciate this too:

2 nights ago I did something I definitely didn't feel ready to do and wouldn't have chosen to do but getting through to buy a ticket made it a "Well, go and see how it feels, you can always leave if it feels wrong" thing.

I was on a work zoom Wed and looked at my personal email and saw "Foo Fighters at 9:30 Club onsale NOW!" and was like "WTF?! 1200 person venue??" and spent the rest of my mtg looking REALLY engaged and busy in our work but really on ticketron trying to find a ticket. And I did.

This also coincided with my 1st mandatory in-person work event, which we didn't get out of until 7:45pm Thurs night, so I thought for sure I missed the start of Foos show because doors were 6:30, no opener, and I walked up at 8:25pm. But not onstage yet.

Gotta hand it to 9:30 Club, they had BEST vax check of shows I've been to so far. This was my FIFTH concert/event since July (counting Newport Folk Fest as 1 event though multiple days) but all theo thers were either outdoors (which I'm fine with) or the Roots was indoors but only 1/2 sold and everyone could spread out and ushers were MASK POLICE and even got on people who were wearing masks but below nose "Please put your mask over your nose sir!" so that felt fine too.

THIS was 1200 people jammed into a GA club, and I'm short, so could not imagine where I Could stand, see, and NOT be all up against sweaty psyched strangers.

But when you walked up, 1st you got directed to Vax checkers and they looked at your vax card (screenshot) AND your i.d. at same time to confirm same names and birthdays. Then you got a wristband adn only THEN could you go to different line and pick up ticket, then you had to immediately go into venue. No selling your ticket or passing it to somene else, yo uhad to have wristaband AND ticket to get in. That made me feel a lot better.

Then miraculously found a gaping hole on stairs between 1st balcony & 2nd balcony, PERFECT view of full stage and they let us stay on one side of stairs the whole night, so no one right up on me AT ALL all night. Got in position at 8:35, they went on at 8:41!

And even though I checked setlists and except for 1 song it was exact same setlist from most shows so far on this tour, IT WAS FUCKING AMAZING AND SO WORTH BEING THERE FOR! Plus Grohl's stories were all DC stories, and he pointed out historical music figures in audience a couple of times, and though there were some songs the band looked kinda like "yeah we've played this song 8,000 times", there were many songs where stuff that happened or solos or just the audience made the band go nuts too, and that was awesome as well.

The joy, the pent up energy, the release, the mental stress & mania, and the gratefulness were all TANGIBLE. Sang, screamed and danced my ass off, and honestly I"m not even a major major Foo Fighters fan, though I saw their 1st tour with Mike Watt and Eddie Vedder's wife's band so been following them from the beginning (seen them MANY times and met Grohl many times). It was amazing. It'll probably be awhile before I see a show that great and intense, so I guess I'm ready, bring on the club shows if the vax check in process is as good as it can be!

Also for the hardcore Dave Grohl fans, he told the "Weenie Beenie" story at the 9:30 Club and then they played it, the only song unique to this setlist and not on all the other recent ones. And it was freaking incredible!

Plus the guy who set up the studio for Weenie Beenie was in audience, so he got shouted out and waved. Quite a few key figures in Grohl's evolution in audience, no surprise there since it was his hometown show.

And for any DC folks here, Grohl also was the 1st to announce that the 9:30 Club is building a replica of the ORIGINAL, much beloved 9:30 Club on the side of the 1st one, in the space that used to be Satellite Bar (I miss their boozy milkshakes & good DJs!). So it'll be a replica of the original club, but "without the stench & the rats" is what they're saying. So that was a big announcement too, smaller venue next to current 9:30 Club, basically taking over what we lost when U Street Music Hall closed.

Amazing 2.5 hours! They'll have to top that in Coney Island, which is 5,000 people, but also it's NYC, so I'm sure the energy will be different but amazing too!

I was there too. really an epic night. I've seen too many bands to count in that club and this was the first time a band has seemed larger than life on that stage - like they have no business playing there. true that the setlist was nothing special on paper, but I think that misses the whole point of the night.

and the club did a hell of a job managing the whole process. since you arrived late, you didn't see the line the stretched all the way up V street and then down 8th. they had stafff walking that line for a couple hours doing vaccine checks and handing out those bracelets well before you got to will call.
