Re: General Discussion on Setlists as a Whole This Year

That is such an absurd statement. I was railed on Dave the last three nights, there was zero disappointment, each show was special for its own reason, the band absolutely played their hearts out and were enjoying it... N2 London crowd was insane and the Europeans would give a fucking leg to see this band like we can regardless of the set, so we are lucky.

Quote:
These songs in these spots have become so predictable:

Jimi Thing (Sexy MFer outro, for the millionth time. Seriously, when is the last time they did NOT play this lame outro?)
Grey Street
-----------------

Ants Marching

^Blah. Glad I wasn't there b/c I would have left disappointed, especially with this being a N2 show in London.

At least they played Say Goodbye and You Never Know.

I really cant believe theyre still doing Sexy MFer. Its been a full partial outro for the last like 4 years.

Yeah I know but they werent actually playing the song, dave would just kinda sing it over and over and theyd riff off the tune, now its basically just a mesh of the two songs.

But your point stands, the fact that hes beeing singing it for that long is a joke in general.

I can imagine why people don't like, but I'm still digging Seven and She is young enough to be not annoying me. But what I don't get indeed is that I'm the only one who hates SG.

I dont even hate on jimi like many here. Its a staple classic to me and I dont care if it gets played if I didnt have to listen to that shit at the end of it.

Because its one of the best songs in the catalog.

Jimi is classic DMB. It's a song that should open shows, or be played in the 2 or 3 spot more often. Stop closing, or nearly closing with it.

It also needs a makeover. If they could with up the "jam" structure and cut off the stupid Sexy MFer ending, then it would be viewed much more favorably.

The fact that Jimi has "changed" in over ten years is just pathetic and the only reason people hate the song now.

So much this. Jimi is a great song, it's everything that's great about DMB. I could listen to any Jimi from 93-00, once the FWIW interpolations started in 2003, the song really became a bore.

YMDT, Grey Street, and Corn Bread closed out the 3 nights of the Gorge in 2018. At this point who fucking cares. Dave apparently doesn't.

I'm content going to my one show a year. If I get some surprises, cool. If not, whatever. At this point, especially given the setlist trends as of late, I'm not expecting this band to reinvent the wheel 25 years into their career.

Say Goodbye is a Top 20 all time DMB song. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, my opinion though is if you feel differently than that you are wrong. It's some of the best lyrics Dave wrote in the earlier days and it is just a pretty honest and relate-able topic, especially for someone around the age of when he wrote it. Plus Carter and Roi (now Jeff) are just phenomenal on it.

As for Jimi Thing... I just can't with that song anymore. I used to be cool with it. Maybe I am just old but it has fallen so out of favor with me now. The Sexy MFer thing is terrible but even changing it wouldn't get me excited about it. The only thing that would make me at all excited to hear it was if the band was going to go into What Would Be Come Of Me and flesh that out. That's a gorgeous piece of music.

Exactly. These guys are comfortably coasting into retirement. Hence the no practice, hardly any variation of setlists, songs played the same way show after show.. they don’t care.

Say Goodbye is a poor man's Rapunzel. It's not terrible, but it's nowhere near top 20 for me.

Jimi Thing is an absolute classic, but still needs to be played less and/or shortened.

Right, I mean they’re having fun, who wouldn’t playing live in front of an awesome fan base (with the exception of us of course)?

Edit: just got your sarcasm lol.

They aren't even the same kind of tune. Say Bye is an acoustic love song, with an amazing intro.

Rapunzel is a funk song with multiple different time signatures.

I guess they do share similar lyrics, and both have progressive rock elements. And both are top 20 DMB material

Because Rapunzel improved upon it. Say Goodbye feels like a rough draft in comparison, at least studio versions.

Yea.. don't agree with that. They're not really trying to do the same thing either musically or lyrically. It's fine to prefer one over the other but they're not really related or all that comparable.

Yes, pretty much all of ED and SU. I genuinely like the rest of the studio albums front to back...it's how we listen to them and other artists. The only time we generally skip is either to skip back and hear a song again or if we want to hear a specific tune and we've only got enough time left for the one (e.g.: driving and almost at our destination). DDtW has become a zero for me live because I've heard it too much and the studio version is better. Plastic Girl, a bunch of the unreleased tBS songs, and several of their covers are (or would be, if I'd seen them) a -1 for me.

I'm not hyper critical or over-analytical with music as a general rule. Either I like it or I don't and then their are grades of "like". So, if I like a song it's getting a 1, unless I was there or have heard the performance and they played it poorly.

I've stated many times that I'm far more lenient in judging set lists...
