It's just a remarkably safe place in general. Most cops don't even carry guns.

That said, when I was there, the friend we were staying with did allude to the fact that I'm migration was becoming a big concern/irritant. Don't think anyone thought something like this was coming.

I am curious to find out how he obtained the weapon.

as some of you know, I live down in New Zealand. We're a very small peaceful country and yes generally it is considered one of the safer places on the planet.

The whole country is in complete shock and devastated. We've never had any song of attack like this. Generally if there is one murder, it's front page news yet alone a terrible attack like this.

A very dark day. I certainly can't bring myself to watch that live feed. Am very sad here.

CHRISTCHURCH, New Zealand (AP) — New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern on Thursday announced a ban of “military-style” semi-automatic firearms and high-capacity magazines like those used in the shootings at Christchurch mosques last week.

Ardern said a sales ban was effective immediately to prevent stockpiling and would be followed by a complete ban on the weapons after new laws were rushed through.

She said people could hand over their guns under an amnesty while officials develop a formal buyback scheme, which could cost up to 200 million New Zealand dollars ($140 million).

The man charged in the mosque attacks had purchased his weapons legally using a standard firearms license and enhanced their capacity by using 30-round magazines “done easily through a simple online purchase,” Ardern said.

“Every semi-automatic weapon used in the terrorist attack on Friday will be banned,” she said.

The ban includes any semi-automatic guns or shotguns that are capable of being used with a detachable magazine that holds more than five rounds. It also extends to accessories used to convert guns into what the government called “military-style” weapons.

It's weird that there was so much outrage from everyone during the Christchurch attacks (rightfully so), but many of the same people don't have any comment on the attack on Catholic churches in Sri Lanka on Easter that killed 4 times as many people. I guess it doesn't fit the narrative.

Yes, there is a big conspiracy to ignore attacks on Christians.

There are no other differences whatsoever in the two attacks that could possibly account for the disparity in internet comments/clicks.

I don't understand what you are getting at. One attack killed way more people so I would think that would be covered at least as much as the other. I never said there was a conspiracy theory.

Let’s also not forget that New Zealand is an almost entirely murder-free country, and Sri Lanka is most definitely not.

I’m not saying that minimizes the attacks in Sri Lanka, but it’s not anywhere near as shocking when it happens there as opposed to New Zealand.

Where were you? You could have started the discussion? Or, like I said to kym, it's almost like you too didn't feel like jumping on a DMB message board to talk about a terrorist attack while you were presumably at home withy our family on Easter Sunday.

I wasn't talking about this forum. The New Zealand attack was the top news story while this one didn't get as much attention. I understand some of the reasons for that. Sorry if I upset some people with my original comment.

I'm not saying you're wrong as I don't really watch much network news broadcasts, but do you have any data to back up that there was a lack of attention/coverage other than your personal perception? I'm mostly on Twitter and it seemed heavily covered there. Granted that is a curated grouping of sources and I follow lots of reporters.

Its a mix of a rise in hate groups feeling empowered, and the unfortunate fact that these places are just "soft targets". More so than many places, these are areas with a high density/concentration of people, difficult to access exits, and very low security. Much like movie theaters, too. They're generally easily accessed and offer these lunatics a high kill count chance. It's pretty terrifying to think about.

Yeah this sucks. My kids are in the Douglas County school district, different school, and were on lockdown Sounds like 2 shooters and 8 kids shot. Extremely frightening.
