Mumford & Sons

Anyone here seen them before? I'm going to see them for the second time in NYC next Tuesday, May 18th. They're tremendous. Pick up their first album, Sigh No More when you have a chance. You can thank me later. Believe it.

Discuss the goodness that is Mumford & Sons!

    I like them a lot, my only complaint is their songs all kinda do the same thing musically; start comparatively slow/soft then build into heavy groove with a lot of banjo. BUT they are well written songs lyrically and melodically and its a fairly unique sound so it works.

    One of my best friends recently saw them live and could not stop talking about the show. Even his brother, who is one of those people who is generally indifferent about music, said something to the extent of "They made me feel like I was a part of something."

    Saw them last week at lincoln hall. It was pretty boring. I by no means think pitchfork is the be all end all of music, but they are dead nuts on with this. Some people will like them, not for me though.

    "Mumford & Sons take an emporium approach, with an inventory that's broad but never deep. By spreading their attention around so many different trends, they aim to do many things adequately-- perhaps to distract you from an inability to do any one thing especially well. They love big moments and acoustic instruments, so you might call what they do hoedown pop, although that might be giving them too much credit: Every hoedown on Sigh No More-- every rush of instruments in rhythmic and melodic lockstep-- conveys the same sense of hollow, self-aggrandizing drama. And they pull that shit on every track."

    http://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/13906-sigh-no-more/

    -basically it was the same thing over and over and over again. at one point the guys on stage had an ES-335, and some hardcore rocking stuff, and they were fingerpicking the song slowly. Please do not hold this much ammo and tease me with a little pansy pop song

    You can not like mumford and sons, that is your choice and whether they are good or not is largely a matter of opinion.

    With that said, that pitchfork review is utter crap. Totally misinterprets many of the songs. I know people can read into songs their own way, but this guy is way off. He never once discusses the obvious spiritual themes on almost every song.

    I for one think this band is great. The lyrical content brings the music to another level as I feel I connect to the themes and issues he sings about.

    "Sigh no more" is actually a shakespeare quote:

    "Sigh no more ladies, Sigh no more;
    Men were deceivers e'er;
    One foot in sea, one on shore.
    To one thing constant never;
    Then sigh not so, but let them go
    and be you blithe and bonny."

    The whole album contains literary references..its fucking genius, and its pretty much all I listen to now.

    I literally have to force myself not to listen to them because I don't want to outplay them.

    "After the Storm" is a beautiful song. The lyrics won me over.

    "And after the storm,
    I run and run as the rains come
    And I look up, I look up,
    on my knees and out of luck,
    I look up.

    Night has always pushed up day
    You must know life to see decay
    But I won’t rot, I won’t rot
    Not this mind and not this heart,
    I won’t rot.

    And I took you by the hand
    And we stood tall,
    And remembered our own land,
    What we lived for.

    And there will come a time, you’ll see, with no more tears.
    And love will not break your heart, but dismiss your fears.
    Get over your hill and see what you find there,
    With grace in your heart and flowers in your hair.
    "

    just started listening to them today. I will agree a lot of their songs sound the same/same pattern. But they are really good and totally different than what I usually listen to. "Little Lion Man" is my favorite on Sigh No More
