Damn.

Yeah, diluting is really the only way to go. Train your dog to pee in the same area, then give it a regular soaking.

I need to lay grub control, I have several moles digging trenches but my yard is too big to control so I let them go and use a few traps to kill those blind bastards.

I need to spray broadleaf herbicide but doubt I'll get to it this weekend. Sometimes when I spray broadleaf I mix in random insecticide to control ants, grubs and other pests but I only use that for a few laps around the house.

I hold the world record for abundance of crab grass in 1 yard. It's unbelievably out of control.

Crabgrass is hard to control once it takes hold. I use a pre-emergent which keeps it pretty much under control, though I still have a bit that pops up in the summer.

My landscaping could use some updating, but my law has been looking great love getting compliments on it from neighbors my lawn guy, Ivan, I think takes special care of my lawn. I think fertilizing in the winter - which I just did for the first time ever - is really paying off

The yellowing is from nitrogen burn. Your best bet is to limit the spots where your dog pees and then flushing the area with a lot of water right after he pees on it to dilute the nitrogen content. You can also decrease the percentage of nitrogen in your dog's pee by making sure your pooch is well hydrated. Try adding some water to his food and occasionally putting a few ice cubes in his water dish to encourage him to go there.

Wasn't I trying to help you tackle this a year or two ago? I had the same issue and it's almost totally fixed (see above pic). And I have a massive tree so almost no direct sunlight. It's a little late in the season for dropping new seed, but I can give you some tips for the fall if you like.

I've great success using Scott's Turf Builder Winter Guard Fall lawn food (Late Fall) followed by their Turf Builder Halts Crabgrass in early spring. I still have a few small patches along the sidewalk, but I kind of neglected my edging at the end of the year last year. I'm chalking it up to that for the time being because there is NONE on the rest of my lawn now. When I first moved in my front lawn was almost totally crabgrass and sedge.

Probably. I think for a couple of areas, it's my dog. It's not that big of a lawn and he's a pretty big dog.

Yeah, that's tough if you're not hovering when he's peeing, which is what I do with my rottie (not small ).

I use Lesco Dimension as my pre-emergent, typically in late March as the ground temp hits around 55 degrees. In April I give my lawn a shot of nitrogen (Ringer or Milorganite) to help wake it up from dormancy. Ringer and Milorganite is basically best shit ever. All organic so you don't have to worry about chemical burn. Milorganite is super cheap too.

Will have to look into those. I've been using Coop Poop for my organic ferts.

Ringer Lawn Restore works faster...put it down and within a few days to a week you should see results. Milorganite is slow release and is more to condition your soil, which results in healthier grass. I put Milorganite down 3-4 times per year.

Condition how? I use gypsum. Supplies calcium for stronger roots and strips away salts.

Depending on the plant, if you re-pot them in the fall and bring them indoors you can plop them out again in the spring.

Nice crab grass advice. My lawn is very unhealthy; it grows but it's patchy and thin. Granted I just moved in last year and haven't really spent much time on it other than mowing and such.

New Question: Do any of you have rose bushes? If so, how much water do those fuckers take??

I'm only 2.5 years into my first home/lawn and I feel like a pick up a little more info each season (like Beefy's a few posts up). Another must for crabgrass control is allowing your lawn to grow longer. This is good practice for weed control in general, but it's especially important during the period during which crabgrass seeds germinate. This article is pretty good and gives you a good idea of when they'll germinate and when to add your pre-emergent:
    http://purdueturftips.blogspot.com/2...germinate.html

Roses are tough. I rented a Cat and yanked mine out when I moved in. Generally speaking, they need a lot of water. Of course, if you overwater, you run the risk of root rot which will eventually kill off your plant. Here's a pretty good article I just found: http://www.rose.org/rose-care-articl...ater-my-roses/
