I'm only 2.5 years into my first home/lawn and I feel like a pick up a little more info each season (like Beefy's a few posts up). Another must for crabgrass control is allowing your lawn to grow longer. This is good practice for weed control in general, but it's especially important during the period during which crabgrass seeds germinate. This article is pretty good and gives you a good idea of when they'll germinate and when to add your pre-emergent:

Roses are tough. I rented a Cat and yanked mine out when I moved in. Generally speaking, they need a lot of water. Of course, if you overwater, you run the risk of root rot which will eventually kill off your plant. Here's a pretty good article I just found:
