I just think the right people aren't put in charge. King is a master storyteller, and you would think a good story is a good story, whether it be on film or on paper.

I did like Cloverfield, I will admit. And I think his influence on Lost is overstated.

Maybe that dude should have read his own link:

    Quote:
In November 2009, Abrams stated that he would not be adapting the series. During an interview with MTV Abrams made the following comments: "The Dark Tower thing is tricky. "The truth is that Damon and I are not looking at that right now." Furthermore, in an interview with USA Today Damon Lindelof stated that "After working six years on 'Lost,' the last thing I want to do is spend the next seven years adapting one of my favorite books of all time. I'm such a massive Stephen King fan that I'm terrified of screwing it up. I'd do anything to see those movies written by someone else. My guess is they will get made because they're so incredible. But not by me."[22]
So, the people that supposedly own the rights to it seemingly have no interest in doing it. Not a good sign.

Well it's a good sign that they're holding off on doing anything about it because they're scared shitless of cocking it up...and very cool that they bought the rights for $19!

I'm not sure if Abrams is still going to be involved, but from fairly recent interviews Lindeloff and Cuse plan to get to work on it as soon as they're done with Lost.

EDIT: But I see your quote from November, in the Wiki article I indeed only quickly skimmed, so looks like they may have changed their minds!

Probably for the best, it was a long, meandering, plodding series that didn't work great as books IMO. I can't see a movie of it being anything but terrible. Unless they scap the majority of plot (most of which goes nowhere anyway) and condense it in to 3-4 hours.

I'm halfway through the last Dark Tower book. Been plowing through the series and I really enjoy it, but this being my 3rd book in a row of it, I'm ready for it to be over.

I think the only way a film project of it could work would be as a HBO series

I am definitely a Stephen King fan. My favorite books include The Shining, the Stand, It and Needful Things. My favorite short story collection is probably Skeleton Crew. The story, Survivor Type, may be the creepiest story that I have ever read. I loved the Dark Tower series, although I admit I was disappointed in the ending – but for the most part it was a lot of great reading. Another Dark Tower book, between books 4 and 5 would be amazing! I am looking forward to reading Under the Dome.

I'm currently reading an excerpt from Under the Dome on the kindle (it's a generous-sized excerpt). One question, for those of you who are far along in this book, does the gory stuff get toned down eventually by chance? Currently I'm at the part just after the three old ladies go slamming into the invisible wall and it's just been one gruesome event after another so far. I know its Stephen King, I just wonder if there's more of a story here the more you get into the meat of it or if it's just one graphically violent death after the next.

I'm currently reading the second Dark Tower book. I haven't read the rest the of the thread but Adrams and Damon both have said they are no longer doing this as a movie. The only person I would allow to do this is Peter Jackson.

There are a lot of gory parts, but those parts get really spread out after the dome is established. It definitely fleshes out a detailed story, as it's much more about the devolution of the community than it is about murder and mayhem (though there certainly is murder and mayhem involved in said devolution).

I just finished it last night. Took me around 2 weeks.

^ One more thought... think about it, if an invisible impenetrable wall plops down instantly in a town, the first few hours are going to be absolute fucking chaos and carnage. That's what he's capturing in the excerpts you read. Like I said, once The Dome is clearly established, King settles in to the story.

do it now, unless you have a bunch more King to read because nothing will live up to it afterwords.

The Stand is the first King book I ever read. It's fucking EPIC and not in lame internet meaning of the word.

I read it first at age 12, then at 17, then at 22... which reminds me, I'm 27 and due for another reading.

    Read it.

I've never read the newer, extended version. I found my copy on a bleacher at a little league ball park, in 1994, and have read the exact same copy on each of my repeat readings. I want to read the extended addition, but I can't see breaking this tradition. That copy is old and falling apart, but the feel of it in my hands is just so... familiar.

I have about 200 pages left of The Dark Tower to read and I'm almost afraid to finish it after all the bad reviews of the ending.

It is strange to think about but I've been invested in the story for almost 15 years now and don't want a sour taste in my mouth after it's over.

Reading "Just After Sunset" now, nearing the end... a bunch of GREAT stories, but the one about the hell-cat was a little out of left field.

What made you wait till now to read the last few? It took me 10 years between 1 and 7, but that's because I read 5-7 as soon as they came out.

Anyway, I had a decade or more invested in this series, and I fucking LOVE the ending. Love it. I don't want to spoil anything about it for you, but it's perfect, it really is.

I cant say that it was the ending I wanted, but it is the right ending.

    Truth.

Although, I'm not sure what ending I wanted (either time I've read the series!) but you're right, it fits perfectly. And for that I am content!

when I was in high school and college I didn't read for fun, just started to get back into it about 5 years ago and I started reading other things like The Stand, Douglas Adams, Chuck Palaniuk, etc. because I didn't want to spend a year reading through all of them( I am a really slow reader, not that I have a hard time reading but I only send about 15-30 minutes reading a day so it takes awhile)

anyway, I picked it back up at Wizard and Glass(my favorite so far) in June and have been plowing through them.

I really disliked that part personally. One of a few ways a character/plot element is dealt with too easily after long build up.

I'd be more descriptive, but I don't want to post spoilers--and it doesn't seem like ants has the
