Revenue:

3). Elton John ($1.75 billion)
4). Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band ($1.53 billion)
5). Madonna ($1.39 billion)

    Fun stats to see.

People always like to compare the revenue but every artist charges different amounts. Tickets sold are where itís at. Good for them.

We have our grievances about ticket prices, but this shows DMB charges less than a lot of the other acts on that list.

It would be interesting to see how many shows each artist played. To get an idea how much each act is charging per show but also how many tickets they're selling per show.

Especially earlier in their career. Tickets have sure jumped up recently, but for a long time they were very low considering.

Early on, they prided themselves in charging the same for the front row as the last row

On average it is about $49.50 - $55.00 for Lawn, all depending on where.
Checkout DMBAlmanac and it will have ticket costs for every show on the left.

Re: DMB #2 in tickets sold and #13 in touring revenue in the past 40 years

Make no mistake about it if DMB toured as little as modern touring for Pearl Jam, Elton John (pre farewell tour and post early 2000s) and Springsteen they would charge more per ticket. But that is the beauty of them touring so much and what they should take pride in. Capshaw and drug problems broke phish from touring in the frequency of DMB but Dave and Crew survived waves of change and still have had frequent shows. Even of off years like 2007 dave and tim went around and 2011 the band had a quality in the limited caravan shows. Consistency and longevity of DMB is unmatched in this modern era.

You have to go way back to find a time Phish was doing 40+ shows a tour, long before the break up. Last tour with even 30 shows was fall Ď96.

The tickets sold is amazing - you have to go all the way to #8 at Kenny Chesney for the next artist that wasn't touring the full 40 years the numbers trace. Only 5 of the top 15 of tickets sold didn't have the full 40 years to do so. (DMB, Chesney, Trans-Siberian Orchestra, the Dead and Phish).

Out of the top 15 in tickets sold, I've seen 7 artists / our of the top 15 in revenue, I've seen 8 artists.

This isn't surprising at all, they have been an absolute touring machine. Everyone thinks of the Grateful Dead as such, but DMB has gone past their total number of shows in a decade less time. Phish was touring 10 years before DMB, they are no where close to the number of all time gigs.

Those are pretty good numbers for a band that tours substantially nearly every summer.

Any major act that you can get in the door for $60 plus fees is pretty low. I know some Res seats are a bit higher, but in comparison to some of these other acts they are a fraction in comparison. I've been able to sit in lower reserved the last 5 years no problem for around $130 a seat. That's crazy. U2, Stones, Springsteen all are typically in the 500-1000's for those close seats.

They really are the powerhouse of touring. U2, Springsteen, stones all tour infrequently. Springsteen hasn't toured in 7 years?

Grateful Dead proper is what that stat refers to. Not Dead and Co or other iterations right? Different times for sure. Grateful Dead wasn't playing stadiums either until late 80's. I know they played Arena sized venues, but the majority of those big audiences was like 87-95.

For as much flak as we give DMB management, they know what they're doing. I think these days the machine runs itself, and they just let it happen. No more marketing, they don't give a fuck about social media in the slightest, and don't care if the band sells or makes another record because it's obvious people still are going to shows in droves with or without it.

It's not like a hit song is going to increase the fanbase at this time. Though I think Samurai Cop kind of reenergized some fans back in 2016-18.

If you just do a straight average, U2 is averaging 655k/year, while DMB is averaging 776k/year. If you count 92 and 93, then you'd be looking at 728k, but there's no way in hell shows when they were still playing bars and frat parties were being tracked by this company. U2 already had two albums out 40 years ago (both produced by Lillywhite), so I think it's fair to count the whole 40 years.

    Given inflation, that's roughly comparable

I paid $39.50 for my first show in Denver in '99

Theyíll be lucky to book gigs at state fairs next summer!

Not surprised to see theyíre doing well, when even the people who have a bad time at their shows continue to buy tickets.

It's interesting to see that in their >30 years of touring, a bit more than half of their overall revenue came from a single decade: 2000-2009. https://news.pollstar.com/2009/12/31...matthews-band/

Not surprising, since early 2000s was probably peak DMB time. I'd be curious how the other half of that $1.09 billion breaks down with the other two-thirds of their career.

they also don't tour like DMB and many others
like 7 shows in 2021 according to here https://www.songkick.com/artists/312...jam/gigography

perfect example of why these lists are not worth much imo
one artists tours a lot while another doesn't.
    one charges twice as much
one plays stadiums while another theaters
way to many variables to say this person is #1. #1 based on a raw stat, sure but apples to apples the list would most likely change

Pearl Jam has been Lazy AF the last decade maybe you can attest some of that to some tours where they were avoiding Ticketmaster and or were blackballed cause some years they was like "were doing a few football stadiums and FCKit!"

For a band that can sell out Fenway Park they are only doing Camden and MSG in the NYC/Philly Metro meaning anyone in new england has to go to Quebec or NYC/Philly to see a show.

For the small % of fans who hate dave's political stances Eddie takes it to a whole new level lol.

Since 2015 NYC has had around the same amount of Temple of the Dog Reunion tour shows as they have had pearl jam shows (rip chris cornell)

Surprised but not surprised Dylan isn't on these lists

Surprised he's not because they call every batch of new gigs another leg in his Never-Ending Tour

Not surprised because I don't think he's charging three figures or more on a regular basis

Crazy these numbers are only from like 1980 to now I believe. So that doesnít include all the older bands on this list touring prior to 1980. And also springsteen hasnít toured since 2016.
