Re: Random dmb thoughts that don't need its own thread
i won't make a new thread as this has been discussed numerous times.
people sometimes complain about how generic festival and international show setlists are, but for the most part, those are the songs those people want to hear.
i saw garth brooks the other night (fantastic show) and while he played 2 or 3 songs from his newest album that came out last year, the rest of the night was all older stuff. he even said that he knows a lot of people came a long way to see certain songs, so he was going to play those for them. i was familiar with only about half the songs, and of course songs like Friends In Low Places and The Dance were ones i wanted to hear, just like everybody else in the arena that had waited 15 years to see him perform again.
then i thought about how hard it would be for DMB to do what garth did. Friends and The Dance are like garth's Ants and Crash. DMB has played 2,386 shows, and only 413 had both Ants and Crash. 1,476 shows had one or the other, and 910 shows didn't have either of them. if garth brooks didn't play Friends In Low Places, i would have left as confused and pissed off as i did on 6.4.08 after that Hey Hey My MY > Bitch encore. its a song he HAS to play. but Ants and Crash aren't songs that DMB has play every night because they have so many other songs that are just as popular in a live setting.
listening to LT10 from Lisbon, the crowd was chanting loudly for #41 and then went crazy at the start of Lie In Our Graves. neither of those were singles, but they are so popular because of the live performances. same with songs like Warehouse and Two Step.
so i thought about "what if DMB retired for 15 years like garth and then came back, what songs would they play?" they would have to play Ants every show, right? after waiting 15 years, who isn't going to want to hear Ants? or Warehouse? or Crush?
Don't Drink The Water
Granny
Crash Into Me
What Would You Say
Lie In Our Graves
You & Me
So Much To Say>
Anyone Seen The Bridge >
Too Much
Satellite
Jimi Thing
Everyday
#41
Dancing Nancies >
Warehouse
Crush
Grey Street
Tripping Billies
PNP > Rapunzel
Two Step
--------------------
Gravedigger (Dave solo)
All Along The Watchtower
Ants
after waiting 15 years, who wouldn't want to hear that set? but if that gets played for everybody, then where do you fit Big Eyed Fish > Bartender, Typical, Rhyme & Reason, BOWA, Say Bye, DIDO, Stay, Pig, Lover Lay Down, So Right, The Stone, Seek Up, Jane, etc?
for as generic as festival and international sets may be, its kind of amazing that they'd pull out songs like YMDT, Minarets, Spaceman, and One Sweet World because there are so many other songs that are more known that people expect, even if they aren't singles. i would imagine to those crowds, getting a song like Squirm or Seven would be a huge surprise, even if we don't see them as being that special. the band just has to make sure they save room for Crash and Ants.
