I would have preferred a little more forward momentum. They basically visited with all 20-odd characters for three minutes each. It was an extended coda to last week's episode, which frankly, should have ended the season. I realized they couldnt do that because they had to get Dany to hatch the dragons, and cramming that into an episode with Ned's death wouldn't have worked. But like I said last night, an hour and a half or two-hour finale would have better served the story. Still, its a minor complaint for a show that has mostly worked extremely well this season. I'll tell you one thing -- it sure as shit felt a lot better after watching the comparatively awful Killing finale.

Read an interview with the writers where they discussed budgetary restrictions leading to tough choices (i.e. no battles). Pretty interesting stuff. They were gonna shoot the battle last week from Tyrion's POV, just watching The Mountain destroy invading soldiers, but it got cut from the plan (probably to pay for the dragons).
We already saw what was beyond the wall? I must have missed that episode...

The very opening sequence of the first episode introduced us to the White Walkers.

We never truly saw them though, sans the guy that cuts off the head of the other guy and the creepy little girl. How is that "seeing what's beyond the wall?"

If someone were to ask me what's beyond the wall, I would say White Walkers and wildlings. We've seen various interactions with wildlings and a pretty telling close-up of a White Walker.

    http://images.wikia.com/gameofthrone...ite_Walker.jpg

I assume that's what Beebz was referring to, and I also assume that there's really not all that much beyond the wall otherwise. Just snow and trees as far as the eyes can see...

I suppose there could be remnants of slightly more civilized society though.

Doesn't the Wildling that begins living in Winterfell say that the White Walkers aren't the worst things that are beyond the wall?

I don't remember her saying that, but I do remember some mention of "grumkins" and "snarks." Even then though, I think everyone who is willing to admit that they exist consider the White Walkers the greatest threat.

Yeah, it sort of looked like her from behind. That would have made zero sense though (much like that scene did anyway).

Yea, they must have had an ass and titties quota to fill because not only was that scene pointless, I don't think anyone gives a shit about that old guy.

Wasn't that scene showing that the old guy was more agile than he let on? He was stretching and being crazy flexible before he got dressed, and then he started acting cripples. Other than that, I do not understand that scene.

That's what I took from it. He is deceptively limber, but I don't see why that matters all that much.

Awesome, awesome article discussing how superior the first season of Game of Thrones was to the first season of The Killing.

I'm not that far along in the book yet so I don't if the scene is in it, but from what we saw in the show, I'm assuming they wanted to show us that Maester Pycelle is just as sketchy as the rest of the current small council, ie. Littlefinger, Varys, etc. Not necessarily to the same degree - I don't think Masters take any sort of celibacy oath - but the fact that he sleeps with whores, shares various secrets/stories, and then puts his chain back on (the one they're not supposed to ever take off) and then pretends to be a sickly old man again.

And yeah, I initially thought it was Sansa from behind as well

Current favorite characters are Tyrion, Daenerys and Jon Snow. Going to keep on reading; Spring 2012 is too far away.

Well said, Jimi. Like has been mentioned already, the books contain a lot of insights into the characters that we don't immediately or inherently get in the series. I believe this is the writers' way of demonstrating personality traits, insights, and even some history to the characters in a more creative way. They've done it a few times over the course of the series, the most notable being the scene in the whorehouse with the two gals and Littlefinger... It's like, "want to tell some history without boring the audience? Then tell it while two chicks are getting nasty!"

Really? I thought it was a way of showing that even the characters that appear most unlikely to be playing the game of deception are actually playing.

I still don't see why that matters in terms of Maester Pycelle. We know that his words and his mind are his most powerful assets. It's not as if he's going to be getting into a sword fight just because he's not as feeble as others perceive him to be.

Maybe what they were trying to show there wasn't his physical abilities.

That's all that stuck out to me. The monologue was great, but it didn't surprise me in the least. You say the purpose of the scene was to show that even the characters that appear most unlikely to be playing the game of deception are actually playing, but I feel like we already knew that he wasn't a straight shooter after Sansa begged for mercy for her father and Pycelle insisted that treason is treason.

^^ this is why I'm so excited to read the books. I feel like there's so much more to the story than they can show in an episode or a season and you miss things while you're watching. It'll be nice to get more of the story through the book and go back if I'm unsure of something.

I wasn't thrilled with books episode 9 & 10. Things didn't feel quite as big and epic as I had hoped. But the storytelling was well done, and Ned's execution was pretty good too. Can't wait for the next book, and I'm wondering how they're gonna fit all the stuff in the 2nd book into Season 2!
