I'm not that far along in the book yet so I don't if the scene is in it, but from what we saw in the show, I'm assuming they wanted to show us that Maester Pycelle is just as sketchy as the rest of the current small council, ie. Littlefinger, Varys, etc. Not necessarily to the same degree - I don't think Masters take any sort of celibacy oath - but the fact that he sleeps with whores, shares various secrets/stories, and then puts his chain back on (the one they're not supposed to ever take off) and then pretends to be a sickly old man again.
And yeah, I initially thought it was Sansa from behind as well
Current favorite characters are Tyrion, Daenerys and Jon Snow. Going to keep on reading; Spring 2012 is too far away.
