Which Song On AFTW Has The Strongest Sense of Atmosphere?

I voted for Broken Things because I'm biased, but now I realize I should have voted for Snow Outside. Also "atmosphere" might be where this album lacks the most, besides a few spots.

Here's a dictionary.com definition that pertains most to how the word atmosphere is being used in this thread:

3. resembling or suggestive of the atmosphere; having muted tones and softened or indistinct outlines; hazy: atmosphericeffects.

4. having or producing an emotional atmosphere: atmospheric quality; atmospheric lighting.

To me it's just kind of a feeling that you're being taken to another place while listening... You're not imagining a bunch of musicians sitting in separate booths in a recording studio in Seattle when you hear the song. You're taken somewhere. BTCS is to me the prime example of this. Every song has character, tells a different story, paints a very unique and beautiful picture, evokes a different feeling. Nothing on AFTW is very atmospheric for me besides Drunken Soldier, the outro of Snow Outside, and I guess some parts of Gaucho. This isn't to say I don't love the album. I freaking LOVE the album. But as of right now, it's songs aren't as atmospherically transcendent for me as Lillywhite's previous efforts with them. Maybe my feelings will change.

Also, I've heard the If Only and Crush comparisons a few times now and I really, reaaaaaaaallly do not understand it, as much as I want to. If Only is SUCH a dud compared to Crush. I hope in the future, DMB makes some jazzier studio cuts like they did for BTCS. If only doesn't cut it in my book.

Snow Outside reminds me of classic DMB. It has Lillywhite's signature all over it and if you listen real carefully, at times you can almost hear 'Roi in the back there somewhere. This cut could've easily been on BTCS. Superb... and full of "atmosphere".

'm not one to question your own credibility but any definition of a word that utilizes that samem word is a bullshit definition. ut nevertheless agree with your assessment of what the poster appears to mean by atmosphere: ambiance. So to me, how do you rank ambiance and to what value does one ascribe to those various parts of it (e.g. rage, calm, mellow, etc.)? My answer is Snow Outside or Mercy.

i think the best example of atmosphere is mercy. the song is open and seemingly limitless while still retaining a sense of composition. i don't know; at first i didn't really care for mercy, but i think it is my favorite behind broken things and/or snow outside.

I agree 100% with this. Was trying to think of a way to explain it until I read your post. Perfect.

The outro to Mercy gives me a Planet Earth type vibe. I could listen to a 5 minute cut of that outro while looking at scenes of nature blazed out of my head.

The Riff gives me a north woods cabin feel. Especially with that rocking chair and breathing at the beginning.
