Phish's "You Enjoy Myself" just popped up on my Spotify Radio and it got me thinking: what if "Drunken Soldier" were mostly instrumental until the "That's not a star..." portion, ala YEM?
This may be an unpopular suggestion, as I feel like Phish is pretty divisive in this community, but the two songs have very similar structural elements and I feel like DS would be way more enjoyable for me sans lyrics. That said, I understand that the lyrics are very personal for Dave and function as life advice for his children, but that doesn't mean that they couldn't be used in another piece of music at some point. Dave Matthews I am not, so it's a little unfair for me to suggest that a set of lyrics doesn't fit perfectly with a composition, but humor me here. Does anyone have the audio prowess (and permission, lulz) to mess around with this, or at least fiddle with the mix and turn down the vocals?
Honestly, I feel like the "that's not a star, that's a satellite" and "steppin' out" would be just as effective, if not more so, if they just came out of nowhere in a wonderfully ambiguous manner.
For reference, listen for yourself and compare the arrangements:

The verses in DS seem like they would need a little more to them (solos, fills, etc.) but not necessarily: the Pink Floydy outro could easily have lyrics over top of them, but it sounds great without them, too. Just a thought.
Amiright?
