Re: Random dmb thoughts that don't need their own thread

the tale of the enchanted forest and the golden cigarette

One time I had a DMB dream. That I was watching them in this beautiful garden ampitheater. It was surrounded by trees and flowers and almost enchanted forest like. It was a small venue maybe 5000-7000 people tops... The band was playing some song I'd never heard, but I remember it being unworldly beautiful. Like the kind of thing you had hoped would have been on the album directly following BTCS. I mean I don't know how my subconscious brain created this sound, but it was awesome.

I remember walking around and the music had stopped, but no one was leaving. Everyone was just hanging out. And Dave himself appeared next to me. We talked for one second maybe.. It was almost real life where I was too nervous to really be myself or say anything. But he gave me a handshake and smiled very genuinely and also gave me a cigarette. I dropped it and bent down to pick it up and the cigarette was golden. I looked around and Dave was gone, but this glow from the stage and the music started picking back up almost from a far distance as I was waking up.

This was 15 plus years ago and I still vividly remember these details. I have no idea what it means.

I know right! Like he's in his 50's now, and I'm in my 30's thinking.. fuck... 50 is coming quick! Like way faster than 30 did. And I think Dave still sounds awesome. His voice is less consistent, but I think we have higher standards. I mean some of the 90's shows his voice was blown or off too. It's just that he doesn't hold back on any given night. I think the lessons are finally paying off in the sense that his control is much better. I don't feel like I'm listening to an old guy sing. I feel like I'm listening to a really good singer who happens to be 50.

Still one of if not the top experience for me at a show - That Girl is You from the Gorge with PHJB, I watch this every couple weeks, and remember the incredible energy of that moment. Miss the hell out of live music nowadays but this one always gives me a taste of it even over video:

I just finished listening to the complete Weekend on The Rocks 4 show set. That was quite the ride, and I dug the Stand Up songs on it, even though there were quite a few repeats across all four nights. Still, that was an amazing listen.

Do you know why most people don't share their dreams?

Because they play for an audience for one in a crappy theater for a reason.

    Haha.

On a similar note, not too recently, I had a dream that DMB was playing at my local church in their gym. They have a stage there and that's where they were playing. There were about 20-30 people there (almost seemed like it was a surprise gig) and my parents were there. Seeing as it's DMB, I asked them to grab the show poster for me as I saw a merch stand and was trying to get a front row seat. For some reason I heard the whole band playing but I only remember seeing Dave, and he looked really out of it for some reason. Not like Boyd level of dazed, he was still playing and singing but he wasn't doing any improvs or scatting or even smiling, just looking straight ahead, playing and singing. I don't remember ever hearing what was playing but it sounded like something that would've gone perfectly in between Big Whiskey and AFTW if there was an album sandwiched in between those two. And the show was over as quickly as it began. One very important thing though, was that instead of a normal poster, it was a slab of plywood with Dave Matthews Band and the show date and venue engraved on it. That was kinda disappointing.

Anyone who is looking for some good/random content. The 3.31.94 soundcheck jam is some great DMB. 20 minutes of messing around that turns into a great jam.

Honestly I really like Piedmont as a whole release. Some great tunes and I have good memories tied to that release. Feel like Piedmont doesn’t get much love around here.

Grace from Fenway LT 6 is so damn good. It has everything. Has the Roi solo, Boyd solo. Plus I love that Black Water Boyd does. I find myself putting this track on multiple times each week.

I'm a little surprised Dave hasn't put American Baby back into rotation in the last 3 years.

They never play it enough to get it tight again. Love those 06 versions like Fenway LT6. Would take it over a bunch of newer tunes.

Not having The Stone in the top 40 DMB tunes is quite a take. I can see it being outside the top 10 but not much further than that

I finally realized that Stefan did an interpolation of Slowdive's Sugar For the Pill as part of his Crush intro in 2019. Man that was bugging me forever how I knew it but couldn't place it.

The Stone is good, but it is over-rated. Depending on the day, it might make my Top 40, but only just barely. It would be 100% better without the drunk Elvis interp.

Just as a curious observer, what don't you like about it/what about the song puts it below 40 others?

You don't need to do a top 40 but could you give us about ten songs that you have above it that would go against consensus, that might be a "hot take"

Can't believe I'm saying this but after watching the Raleigh 18 crowd butcher the outro, I'm with ya. All the Drunk Elvis' ought to leave the building

    Stone's still a Top 5. Masterpiece

A musician friend said he doesn't think The Stone has any flow whatsoever, not sure if he has actually heard The Stone aside from maybe one of his students trying to learn it
