Re: Random dmb thoughts that don't need its own thread

I say this alot, but I love the Camden n2 13 pig, prob the best from the current era, and I agree that 14 was a bad year, the one I saw in SPAC was particularly quick and kind of off but it was opener of the electric set that night which made up for lack of quality

The Stone has gotten five plays each year for the past three years, whether it be D&T or full band

    That's 15 plays in 3 years

For comparison, Shake Me Like a Monkey has 18 plays in the past year alone

I just find it strange why they don't at the very least keep it in common rotation. Crowd loves it, hardcores love it, seems like they have fun playing it. Outstanding live too

I think LIHOG is a good live song. I don't mind that it can be 15+ min long I think that makes the song good. It's not like If only or angel where it just drags on and on for no reason. LITHOG has an awasome jam IMO

I have so much random dmb thoughts when I drive. This thread is a good idea.

Live Trax vol2 (SF 2004). I really, really enjoy how Dave messed up the first verse of #41. As a relatively new DMB fan (since 2008), are there any other recordings that Dave mixes the lyrics (by accident or on purpose) that make the song memorable?

He messes up #41 on Live Trax 32 pretty badly.

He also mixes up the first and second verse of WWYS on Live Trax 11.

Angel isn't a good song, but the version with Krasno from WH8v2 is real good, I like it a lot.

If you hit up the almanac, you can find all alternative lyrics for #41 on the song page, then go from there. Tends to happen alot where he accidentally mixes up the verses. There's actually a good Dave and Tim version with a screw up that turned out as a decent improv, I forget which one it is, someone on here probably knows

What I also like about that version is how Carter starts the song as Rhyme & Reason not #41. Just shows what a beast he is, how he transitions into #41 so smoothly, feels almost natural.

The stone is pretty solid now, but it is nowhere near where it used to be. I strongly disagree with those that think that dmb 3.0 stone is as good or better than it has ever sounded.

lots of people do. jeff routinely kills the solo, which was only ever really played once he joined the band. and the cant help falling in love interpolation is a regular thing, which is awesome. how could the song be better back in the day when it was missing 2 of the things that make the song a better performance?

You really think the more recent stones sound better than the stone from LT8 for example? Or listener supported? or LT3?

    What's your favorite released stone?

Sometimes I think, "Damn, Dave would be much more appreciated as a songwriter, musician, and lyricist if his career was as a solo artist."

Then I think, "Damn, Dave may not have gotten anywhere without the best Drummer of the modern era and very good/great supplementary pieces."

I do contend that Dave's "best years" will be in his 50s-70s as he hopefully makes albums with simply a guitar, a scraggly voice, and reflective/profound lyrics.

Granted, I've only heard him on LT 7, and hes almost 70 years old now, but, Paul McCandless sounds amazing with DMB. Closer to LeRoi's style then others, IMHO. I wonder what his schedule was like in 2008 when LeRoi got injured?

im not saying those aren't great performances, but yes, i would rather a current stone than one from 10-15 years ago. i would rather the solo and crowd singing than not.

favorite stone is LT22. yes, i was there. yes, i was front row. its a great performance and jeff kills the solo. i don't see how you can't love it. its not the end of the world for something from today to be better than something from 10 years ago.

You're right it's not the end of the world. Cell phones are much better today then they were 10 years ago, The Stone was much better 10 years ago then it is today. It is what it is.

#41 from Europe 09 just came on my Pandora shuffle and my god, it's awful. Jeff is just terrible and has no subtlety in his playing. Yeah, I'm going to keep listening to shows from 93-00 and 02-04.

That's my biggest gripe with Jeff. All the technical talent in the world, no subtlety or soul to his sound.

This. Same here. Whenever I see people saying The Stone is at its best with DMB 3.0, I'm confused.

The LT 8 version is just perfect. Band was in its prime with this song in '04 especially.

Current versions lack so much compared to ones from 10 years ago.

Tim's obnoxious electric, Boyd's out-of-tune/hard to hear violin, Dave's weaker voice/inability to improv, no Butch to fill out the background perfectly, no smooth/heartfelt Roi sax outro, the list goes on...
