Say my wife is shopping at Wal-Mart and she has to piss. Currently, they have separate, multiple occupancy (I guess that’s what it’s called?) bathrooms for men and women. What does it look like exactly if it’a not gender specific?

Also, do you support legislation mandating this?

So I work in a small/medium sized volume restaurant that has two single occupancy bathrooms that are gendered. They are constantly occupied. We always tell people when there's a wait for one of the bathrooms that it's fine to use the other...just make sure it's properly locked. I can't count how many looks or comments of disgust I've heard from people who are told they can use the opposite bathroom or see someone from the opposite gender coming out of a bathroom.

Obviously before we ever got to legislating universal bathrooms we need to re-design our stalls to provide more privacy like every other civilized nation has done for eons.

Best bathroom situation I've been in were stalls that were private rooms, like with doors and walls, not partitions, and a central communal sink. Classy bar in Manhattan.

My question is are the stalls completely closed off though? Most stalls are pretty open in men's and women's rooms, one of the worst parts of American public restrooms, and I'm curious how people feel comfortable sharing a toilet in that situation. Personally, I don't care, I used to live in a gross frat house and can poop just about anywhere but I'm curious how this works in non single occupancy restrooms.

In the place where I was, yes

Similar to mYeAgZ55's experience, it was a bar in San Francisco

The place was a speakeasy during Prohibition and is now a bar/concert venue

I don't see how gender integration is any different than racial. We live in a country where 8,000 F-bombs iterated and heads blown off in a movie is equivalent to showing a woman's nipple, women's pay is disproportionate to men, we have the 14th highest rape rate per capita, women have to wait longer in bathroom lines, etc.

Let's start treating each other as equals. Bathrooms included.

There's a pretty simple reason for this...

I'm all for equality under the law, but the idea that men and women are exactly the same and exhibit the same behaviors for the same reasons is either ignorant or a delusion.

Let me ask you this, if the issue was inverted and men had to wait longer for the bathroom than women:

a) Would we even be talking about this?

b) There is no way in hell it would be changed and make the wait for women longer.

To the first bold, they may but they wouldn't be taken seriously.

To the second, if it incurred a negative consequence for them then likely not. You'd hear the cookie cutter "patriarchy, oppression" narrative come out.

EDIT: And to confirm this, if we made it so that abortion could never be taken away with the clause that men could financially opt out it would never pass. Because it would still be seen as a negative for them.

It seems like there's a logistical issue that probably needs to be resolved. Like wouldn't you have to convert restrooms to be able to accommodate both genders more adequately? I know that in many public restrooms there's usually an abundance of urinals, for example, and not nearly as many stalls.

I've been known to use the women's room when it's available and the men's room isn't. Like if I'm the only person in line and can wait, fuck it, I'll wait. But with my gallbladder removed sometimes.... it's either the bushes or the women's room.
