Though I understand your point. I've sometimes heard classical musicians referred to as technicians because they can play the notes on the page to perfection but sometimes lack a certain soulfulness in doing so.

yeah. I mean, i think that's similar to people not getting Pollock or andy Warhol and saying they weren't true artists (VanGoh too) because they were poppy or abstract. But, what people don't understand is that all three of those were classically trained and just expanding on what they learned. Same with Grateful Dead and Phish. Phil taught himself how to play the bass but was classically trained at the trumpet. Trey was a music student and has written some INCREDIBLE peices of music.
Divided Sky is not a jam, it's the same every time. (especially in 3.0) It's a composition. same with Fluffhead or even parts of Harry Hood. Granted they've been known to use them as Jam vehicles, but it always comes back to the composed peices.
Now as far as 2.0 phish when trey was using i'll say that to an extent bores me. It's too far out there, and i'm not trying to listen to him play my favorite song in the wrong key at what was to be their last show ever..
as for Grateful Dead being boring.
