Well, I've been wanting to upgrade for a few years now - I just haven't jumped on it yet. My buddy was gonna give me his USB Music Hall turntable and I got to reading reviews of that, then Doby mentioned the Essential II so I started reading reviews on that and said, what the heck I'll just buy that. But then Alex mentioned I could get a Carbon with a promo code for like 30$ more than the Essential II, so down the wormhole I went. One thing led to another and I clicked checkout

I found a few videos, it doesn't look too bad. It looks like just turning the thing at the end of the arm then attaching the weight thing on the end. I hope I can figure it out

It's not bad. Just watch the tutorial videos and take your time. I got frustrated the first time I did it but that was purely because I was rushing.

Congrats on the new table. Do not rush your setup and you should be a very happy camper.

Anyone have any recommendations for record stores in the Chapel Hill/Durham area? I am in that area for the weekend and wasn't sure if anyone had been to one there. Seems to be quite a list on the RSD site.

That was super quick, turntable is set to be delivered tomorrow.

Until we set up our surround this summer, I'm going to buy a set of bookshelf speakers to get by until the installation in July. Any recommendation for a good set to get by for a few months?

Are you building your surround system from scratch? If so, consider a decent bookshelf to get you by that would make a great surround channel speaker when you build your multichannel system.

    Here's some options:

I would like to buy an all encompassing set that has everything included. My goal is to not have wires if possible, I'm not a fan of running wires all over the place, so if wireless surround is an option for satellite speakers in the set, that's something I would like to have.

Unless you buy a package deal, all in one sets really don't provide you with good sound. And by package deal I mean a speaker manufacturer gives you a discount on a set of their standalone center, surround, front and subs, then you buy an AVR separately.

HTiBs don't have components sold separately.

For wireless speakers to work properly IMO they'd have to be active, so would need to be wired into your AC. I'd rather just run speaker wire, it's pretty easy to have no wires showing.

This is the height of the wires you can see on my surround channels:
    http://images.static-bluray.com/htga...21944_full.jpg

    Approximately 4ft long.

Alternately a bunch of my friends listen to so much vinyl that they forego surround sound and listen to all movies in stereo, so they can sink all their speaker money into their vinyl playback.

I love movies and surround music too much to do that.

Anyway, any of those speakers could be re-sold without losing much value.

Can a good stereo setup have comparable or close quality to a surround setup?

    You need to define quality.

If it's fidelity/quality of playback then obviously you need to spend at least three times what you're spending on a stereo set-up to acheive the same quality, you're looking at a great sub and at least three additional speakers for 5.1, not to mention additional amplification.

If you had $5k to blow on speakers, in a stereo set-up you can buy a gorgeous $5,000 pair of speakers. For a 5.1 set-up you have to budget for your subwoofer, center channel and surround channels and so at most you're probably looking at only $1500 for your fronts, when you listen to vinyl on that surround set-up you're going to playback in 2.0 only on a $1500 pair of speakers vs. a $5000 pair of speakers.

    See the dilemna?

If you're asking whether or not any stereo set-up can produce a surround effect that comes even remotely close to a discrete surround track being played back on a surround system then the answer in my experience is absolutely not.

Re: **The Official Vinyl Collectors Thread**

IMO you really want to have a separate setup for your stereo music listening and your surround sound TV/Movies/etc. For your vinyl playback you want to keep your chain all analog if at all possible - Turntable --> Preamp --> Amp/Receiver --> Wired speakers.

That's certainly not to say that you couldn't use one receiver that you run in stereo for your vinyl and run in surround for your movies, but surround receivers often have a lot of digital processing and stuff - not sure if that would take effect when running in stereo or not - Doby of course I'm sure can explain this much better than I can.

    Was considering this setup.

    ProJect Phono Preamp : http://www.amazon.com/Pro-Ject-Audio.../dp/B000YEK1AQ

    Audioengine A5+ : http://www.turntablelab.com/products...tem-white-a5-w
    (These seem very highly reviewed)

Seems like it won't take up too much space and will work for the time being.

I've listened to those speakers and didn't care much for the sound. Also, the fact that they've got the built in receiver, USB, etc-- I don't know, it just throws me off and seems like too much added stuff.

I would just go for bookshelves with a receiver. I can only speak on what I've experienced myself, and these speakers are really phenomenal sounding. I have these with a Denon DP300-F mounted with an Ortofon 2m Red.

Real nice mids and highs. The low-end punch on these things sets them apart from others in this range-- seriously nice full bodied sound-- these things can bump if you need them too.

    Polk Audio TSx220B: https://www.google.com/#q=polk+audio+tsx220b

Take the extra ~$100 and get a receiver

Built in amps are usually ideal as that is what studio monitors do, they will be actively tri-amped which is the ideal speaker setup and what you'll find in mastering houses and recording studios everywhere...however they're also very expensive as you can imagine as you're adding the price of expensive amplifiers.

So I have been looking for the Johnny Cash - American IV recordings. Anyone know where this is available? How is the pressing?

I am tempted to buy the complete box set of the 6 LP's but cant make myself spend the $130.

The issue right now is space, so I'm trying to avoid a receiver until this summer when I'll have a little more open area after we finish remodeling.

That's why I was looking into those powered speakers.

I've never had an issue with that. I would cover them and keep them out of direct sunlight, but I've gone record shopping in TX before and had my records in a hot car all day and never suffered any. I wouldn't suggest leaving them in direct heat/light too long though

I have them (except for 4) and they're great. I bought all mine individually so I could space out the payments. They're not too hard to find. I think I got all of them for less than $20/each. The boxset is the way to go though. You spend about the same buying them individually.

Either way it's great music and they sound really good.

I'd try to bring them in or have someone drop them off at your house. 65 isn't too bad if you can park in the shade and cover them up. Maybe the record store will let you leave them there and you can pick them up on Sunday or something?

    (These seem very highly reviewed)

Seems like it won't take up too much space and will work for the time being.
These Audioengine HD6's sound nice, but are also a little pricy.

Thanks, guys. I'm cool with the record store guy, so I might do what you suggested.

Any info on the Crash Vinyl? Anniversary is rapidly approaching, and I have not heard a thing about this release.
