I would assume should any offenses that need pardoning come to fruition his ability TO pardon would no longer be in effect.

It's a fascinating concept actually. Some argue that a pardon implies 2 parties, meaning that Trump couldn't extend a pardon in a 1-party situation.

Others say that while the constitution doesn't explicitly say he can't, that the framers did no intend for a POTUS to have the ability to break the law without consequence.

Finally, he also can't pardon himself from any state-level charges as the presidency only has the ability to make federal pardons.

Fox has a decent article on it right now with a few legal scholars weighing in. It doesn't sound like they found anyone pro-self pardon

What would be the outcome if successful? He would avoid any legal penalties and then it would be up to congress to impeach still?

Being "successful" in a self-pardon would likely mean winning a SCOTUS case. I doubt that would happen. If it did, who knows. It would be up to congress to impeach.

If he was impeached (and convicted by the Senate) he'd be removed from office and would need Pence to pardon him, but the impeachment would stick. The constitution does prohibit pardons on impeachment convictions - it can only be used in criminal convictions.

At least, that is my understanding of it all.

It was a 7-2 ruling and ruled on in a "narrow" manner (only applied to this case, not establishing a new standard to be applied to other cases).

Even if the court had another liberal instead of Gorsuch, this ruling wasn't going to be changed
