IMO, if it does come out one day that Froome did dope, it could very well mean the end for cycling. I just can't see sponsors wanting to deal with the fallout any longer. Or you have to reclassify cycling as entertainment over sport, similar to pro wrestling so sponsors are aware that the purpose of the event is for entertainment as outcomes have been pre-determined or at least not in control of the essence of true sport.

The gap between no dope and with dope (plus Froomes times) is pretty concerning that something fishy is going on. My guess is its more likely mechanical tampering than PEDs. Sky is the only team that has been caught with a small electric motor on a bike used in competition.

That said, spectacular win by Sagan at the Worlds. TDF made a huge error when they disqualified him this year, the guy lights up a bike race. 3 world champs in a row puts him in a class by himself.

Big day coming up sunday with Paris-roubaix. Quick Step has been incredible this spring, I'm hoping they keep it together and pull off a masterful ride.

My dark horse pick is Wout van Aert.

Aaaaaaaaaaand tomorrow is the big day! Lets get this tour going. Could be a wildly good race this year, great looking stages. I'm pulling hard for Romain Bardet, I would like to see a french winner.
Too bad QuikStep-Floors doesn't have a good GC contender, they have been lights out as a team in the classics.

    Every year is Sagans year.

I love when stage 1 is a proper mass start stage vs the short distance ITT. Lots of sorting out, everyone a little jumpy and nervous. It takes the big teams a day or two to try to get things under control and it makes for great stages.

Sagan in yellow, and green, after Stage 2. TTT up tomorrow. Curious to see if one GC gets that nice cushion, or we lose a GC due to a tough TTT. It is pretty short stage, at 35k, so the gaps should be pretty tight.

I like it when the Tour goes across the cobbles. These are supposed to be the best riders in the world, so they should be able to handle that type of terrain. Yes, the cobbles do pose risks (i.e. more mechanical issues, tighter race areas) that climbing or descending a mountain do not, but I do not think they should be excluded because of those risks. That should be part of the race, how does the rider handle those situations on the cobbles and still maintain and keep their heads. I also like how mechanical issues on the cobbles don't neutralize the race at any point, unlike on mountain stages when it is common to see the leaders hold up due to mechanical issues.

Speaking of the mountain, the Alps start tomorrow, with Alpe d'Huez on Thursday. Time for the first shaking of the tree to see which of the GC hopefuls has the legs to give it a go.

I'm not a big fan of the cobbles. You see too many guys get taken out and it's unfortunate. If you want to race cobbles, that's what the Paris-Roubaix is for.

I'm with whodat on this one. The winner of the TdF is in theory the best all around bike rider in the world, they should know how to do a little bit of everything: keep safe and in the bunch on flat stages, climb well day after day, be able to respond to attacks on hilly stages, ride a decent ITT, and yes- handle some crappy roads. The Giro hits dirt roads pretty frequently. A specialist should never win the tour, I want the best bike rider in the world in yellow as they roll into Paris. If one stage of moderate cobbles knocks you out of contention... you don't deserve yellow.

While that situation can be true, it can also propel a guy to the win. Look no further then Nibali in 2014. He gained 2+ min on the cobbles and used that lead to win the Tour. So it can but both ways.

Over in the sense that no one is going to take the yellow from Sky. Will it be Thomas or Froome, that is the only drama left at this point. Sky will control all the attacks from here on out. The only challenger is Dumoulin, down 1:44 to Thomas and :19 to Froome, and he has to do a lot of work to gain time back as Sunweb doesn't posses the team to dominate from the front.

The saving grace with Dumoulin is that he can time trial, one of the best out there. If Dumoulin can keep it close, say within a minute, the ITT in Stage 20 could be very interesting. However, I see Sky putting in another minute on their rivals by then and taking the wind out of the race.

Nothing is over, lots of racing left. Tomorrow will be more telling, Sky put a ton of effort in today, plenty of opportunities to attack them tomorrow and see if they left too much on the road today. If they dominate tomorrow... that starts to look a little more bleak.

Incredible stage! I'm assuming it was one of those idiot fans that knocked Nibali over, he fought back really well and it would have been nice to see what he could have done without going down. The tour organizers have put together a very exciting set of stages so far.

Perhaps a little too nice. The Tour has lost 6 of the pure sprinters in the last 2 days! Who's going to be left to race on the Champs-Élysées? Maybe this will be a chance for Peter Sagan to win in Paris.

Fun stage today. Thought for sure when Froome surged in the last 4-5K that he was going to take off and win the day. Seemed to be more a ploy to see if anyone had legs left to threaten Thomas.

To some of the chatter about passing the torch and infighting, before Froom's surge, I did find it odd that Froome was behind Thomas for most of the final climb, not the other way around. In most cases the rider in yellow is behind his teammates, so to conserve energy. Guess it didn't matter as Thomas won the stage.

Wow, I had no idea about this! Been too wrapped up with the other end of the peloton now that the race is in the Alps. Some big sprinters are out too. Agree that this is Sagan's best chance to win in Paris. He is all but assured of winning the green jersey, but I am sure he would love to add a jewel that is missing from his resume. A stage win on the Champs-Élysées.

I remember thinking the same thing when Egan Bernal peeled off and only Thomas and Froome were left for Sky it was Thomas in the yellow jersey pacing Froome. While that's definitely odd, I didn't think it was terribly surprising. Before the stage, Thomas had said that Froome is still "the man" so their normal plan would've been for just that to happen. Where Team Sky may have allowed some freedom to Thomas was that in the final few km, if you're still feeling good, go for the win even if that leaves Froome behind you.
