If her head isn’t in it, it’s better for her to drop out and let someone else go instead of potentially dragging the whole team down. If she kept going and kept performing poorly, that silver turns into a bronze or no medal at all.

In the venue, cameras replaying a discussion between Simone and Dr. Faustin from earlier. She appears to be OK. Replays of her Amanar that turned into a 1 1/2 showed her with a big push forward on impact.

Simone said after vault she knew she wasn’t in the right head space. And she didn’t want to risk injuring herself.

Simone said that “I’m doing it for myself” vibe she’s carried since coming back shifted when she got here. She felt she was doing it for someone else. It got to her. She’s been struggling with confidence lately.

Biles broke down in tears as she addressed the media following the women’s team gymnastics final where Team USA won silver.


“Whenever you get in a high stress situation you kind of freak out," she said. “I have to focus on my mental health and not jeopardize my health and wellbeing."
“We have to protect our body and our mind," Biles added. “It just sucks when you’re fighting with your own head."

Biles said those competing are "not just athletes, we’re people at the end of the day."

The team is planning to have a “mental rest day” tomorrow, Biles added.

Oh, I mean how they were tweeted they were plucked and posted out of context which made them look way worse. Even that Reuters article doesn't use her full quotes, which gives you the better perspective. I can't stand journalism like that, manipulating quotes.

I consider myself a great disc golfer and I've done this plenty of time in Disc Golf Tournaments where I am failing and I can't fix the problem then and there. Sometimes you know deep down your not going to be of any help.

Yea, I’m going to have to be negative here. We constantly hear that Simone Biles is the best ever.

I think today proved that she’s not the best. Can’t deal with the stress than you aren’t the best. Sorry not sorry.

I have mixed feelings about this. I’m very sensitive to mental health issues. They are a big struggle in my family. Because of that, I’m having a bit of a hard time with this. She seems to have developed the yips. Now that is in your head, but because of how mental health issues have affected my family (suicides included), I’m a little bit in the realm of “wellllllllllll is that a mental health issue or a mindset issue?”

Where I back off a bit is who am I to judge what is a valid mental health issue. At the same time, some girl is at home and didn’t get to go to the olympics because Biles did. Getcha ass out there and compete. If you can’t do it you lose. But you go try.

So all in all I’m very mixed on all this.

If another gymnast can acquire more net golds throughout their career, it would certainly have an effect. I may think that Tiger is the GOAT for golf, but he didn’t break Nicklaus’ record and likely won’t. That has an impact.

Hope she is able to overcome whatever has been causing her pain - I think she was and is a victim of Nassar. Of course this affects her legacy though, but that's okay. She already proved she is one of the best ever. I do think if Durant quit in the middle of the Olympics due to mental health issues, the reaction from some people might be different.

She doesn’t have a thing to prove to anyone. If she had decided not to compete at all in this Olympics, her legacy would have been that she’s the best ever. She’s still the best ever.

You can’t perform in gymnastics if your head isn’t in it, that’s how you wreck your body. It’s not like being mentally out of it in golf where you’d just get the shanks for a day and go home.

I don’t think Jordan missing a game with the flu would have hurt his legacy. playing through it, especially with the dramatics, definitely helped his legacy though.
