Boston is super touristy. If you want the basics for history just doing the freedom trail. It's in the North end/faneuil hall hall area which is right near the Garden. There are endless tours you can go on.
faneuil hall itself has a ton of historic bars, although I dont think you'll feel much history once inside any of them.
North End has your Italian food options, the faneuil hall/north station area has bar food so i'd stay away from there.
Best bet for real food is Back Bay/south end area. These have your higher end restaurants but the food is usually really good. Back bay also has your historic brown stones and is near the charles river which is a nice walk, although not really the season for it.
My favorite area is the seaport area, you won't get much history since it's brand new but the scene can't be beat. Tons of new bars and restaurants there.
If you are looking to get away from Boston for a day or two. Concord, MA is super historic. It's actually where I grew up.
You have things there like Walden Pond, Old North Bridge, famous homes like Thoreau, Emerson and Alcott. It's about 30 minutes from Boston.
You can also do Salem to see Witch musesums although that season just ended. Also about 30-45 minutes from Boston
All this said here are my restaurant/bar recommendations:
North Station
Ward 8 - Gastropub, awesome drinks and good food. Hit this place up 9 times out of 10 before a garden event.
Sullys tap - Dive to the max, sports bar, dirty and super "Boston"
Everything else in this area are basic sports bars
North End:
Regina Pizza - ranked #1 in the country this year, so you gotta try it right?
Bricco - Great Italian
Modern Pastry - Want a bakery go here, don't go to Mikes
Back Bay:
Bell n Hand - Oldest tavern in the US
Union oyster house - just cause its there.
Seaport:
Legal Seafoods - 3 stories on the water - great views
Trillium - people love this beer - there is a small storefront, i'm not sure the brewery is open yet.
Del Friscos - awesome steak house, awesome water views
Sportello - unbelievable italian
Drink or Luckys - Really cool bars
Smokeshop - Decent BBQ by our northerner standards, will be below average for somebody from Texas.. It's Certainly no Black's family BBQ.
Chinatown
Shojo - Modern chinese 'Tapas' - newer spot, reservation required. Second favorite restaurant in Boston A+
China Pearl - Authentic chinese food, good dim sum on the weekends
Gourmet Dumpling house - Awesome soup dumplings
South End
Boston Chops - Best steakhouse in Boston IMO, awesome drinks
Coppa - Italian, favorite restaurant in Boston, food is unreal
Toro - Tapas and unbelievable (be prepared to wait, no reservations).
Kava - Mediterranean food, unbelievable (also no reservations, so be prepared to wait).
Back Bay- I only really go to this area for brunch but Parish Cafe is an awesome unique sandwich shop, highly recommended.
Sorry for the book but I hope this helps people visiting.
