Re: Thread for any Questions regarding AC Caravan
Ok to answer all questions regarding walking distance I did some calculations based on average walking speed of 20 minutes per mile for all the casinos located on the Boardwalk. People staying at Borgata, Golden Nugget (Trump Marina), or Harrah's should not even consider walking as an option due to the neighborhoods required to pass through, distance, and danger of crossing highways....Your best bet there would be Jitney or any shuttle services being offered....Here's a list of casinos and some hotels which were mentioned, starting with the closest to the venue.
The miles and times are just estimates and assuming you take the boardwalk to west to Albany Avenue and then north to the venue. Most people are unaware that the island on which Atlantic City lies (Absecon Island) is actually slightly obliqued unlike most shore towns. Therefore the boardwalk technically runs east to west even though it feels like it would be north to south since it runs along the beach. Understanding that makes getting around a little easier.
HILTON: .84 miles, 17 minute walk
TROPICANA 1.07 miles, 22 minute walk
TRUMP PLAZA 1.60 miles, 32 minute walk
CAESARS 1.72 miles, 34 minute walk
BALLY'S 1.88 miles, 36 minute walk
IRISH PUB 2.35 miles, 47 minute walk
TAJ MAHAL, SHOWBOAT 2.68 miles, 54 minute walk
I wouldn't attempt walking if you're staying past Bally's. Remember there will be shuttles from throughout the city going to the venue. The locations are still unknown and will probably be crowded but walking an hour isn't much fun.
Other hotels mentioned:
Howard Johnson, 1630 North Albany Ave: 1.44 miles, 28 minute walk
(if the road is shut down past here walking may be the best method, I"ll let you know once the plan is actually formulated)
Day's Inn, Egg Harbor Twp
I think it would be easier to get transport from the hotel to the venue, depending on if access is available from that direction to the venue. Nobody is sure how much of the road they plan on closing, if you can take a cab and get dropped off on the Black Horse Pike AKA Rte 40 AKA Albany Avenue within walking distance it is worth it. If you have to take the Atlantic City Expressway into the city you will only get stuck in more traffic and end up paying a ton for fare.
For people planning on parking in the city, casinos will most likely charge between $15.00-$30.00 for parking. Some may even charge only $5.00. One benefit is once you park in one you can request a receipt and use the receipt to park in any other casino even if the charge is higher. They will take the receipt so you can't do it repeatedly. I haven't tried it in awhile but it should still be their policy, because they want people moving around.
Most casinos will let their premium players park free and give a discounted rate to people with player cards. Every one has their own policy though so you can check to see if you qualify. They can also change their prices at anytime. I've seen them jump from $5 to $20 in less than an hour so be ready for it. I believe Borgata and a couple others have a steady flat rate, however.
To elaborate on Jitneys, they have multiple stops along Pacific Avenue (parallel to boardwalk, one block north). You can see the signs for Jitney stops on most blocks on Pacific Avenue. Make sure you are on the proper side for the direction you wish to go. They have different numbers but most make the major stops, consult the signs for more information. They will stop wherever you like and go along Pacific Avenue and then head towards the casinos in the inlet: Harrah's, Borgata, Golden Nugget.
For the people staying at the Irish Pub, it is a great bar and restaurant. You won't find a cheaper meal anywhere. I would be very careful walking towards Pacific Avenue from the bar because St. James Street is home to various vacant buildings and dark lots. I wouldn't walk there alone, or along Pacific Avenue on that end of town. I don't want to scare people, staying in groups is always much safer. These criminals seek out the solo drunk and take advantage of the situation, so stick together!
Walking along the Boardwalk is generally pretty safe and we will have an enhanced presence and they are working to upgrade the lighting to remove any dark spots along the wood.
As for RV parking I'll have to look into it. I know there's a lot on Atlantic Avenue at Georgia Avenue where I have seen RV's parked before. I have no idea what they would charge. The plus is there's a great 24 hour bar/ restaurant there called Ducktown Tavern.
That reminds me, for those of you who aren't aware, Atlantic City has numerous 24 hour bars (Ducktown Tavern, Irish Pub, Picalilly Pub, Chelsea Pub, etc) for all your all night drinkers.
Near the venue you have the Wonder Bar AKA the Sunset Room, which is located on Albany Avenue at the base of the bridge only a few hundred yards from the concert. They have great food and the bar is out on the bay with great breezes. It'll probably be pretty crowded though. There's a lodge having a party either one night or all nights, I'm not sure yet. The lodge is in the neighborhood across from the venue.
As I think of more stuff I'll add it....Unfortunately I have work in a few hours and need some sleep...
