Theoretically I could agree but I think they knew Billy is habitually full of shit so wouldn't really matter.

I think it was more about wanting to get the 'best' documentary, and scoring the main dude is how you do that.

Also, I think probably a lot more people in docs are paid than we know.

Watched the Hulu doc last night. Honestly, as someone who is in his 30s and doesn't really get Instagram or the influencer stuff, I thought it was fascinating.

Watched it last night too, thought it was really well done. They did a good job pointing out his lies and clearly tripping him up in the interview. Its just truly amazing he thought this thing could still happen in the last month or so leading up to this.

Did I hear correctly that he sent an email out after day 1 which said something to the effect of "we had a rough first day but today is going to rock?"

This was how I felt as well. I don’t have Instagram and never really bothered to get too deep in the social media game and I was completely enthralled with this documentary. It’s amazing how easy it was for them to keep pushing this lie.

Watched the Netflix doc last night. That was wild. I knew it was a shitshow but that was outstanding. I felt terrible for that lady who owned the restaurant. I sorta but not really feel bad for the employees who put $100s of thousands on their own credit cards. Seems like that's just turning a blind eye to common sense.

Watching the Netflix one last night. What an absolute fucking shit show. Billy is the epitome of a 21st century conman - fascinating stuff.

I am a millennial who has always been an early adopter to social media, but IG was one that never clicked for me. I don't understand the fascination with the "luxury" lifestyle and the Dan Blizerian's of the world. It always seems extra empty.

I loved the line towards the end "there were two Fyre Festivals - the actual Fyre was making the promo videos - that's what everyone wanted. It just so happened that 60 people got it instead of 6,000."

I'm also convinced that Billy is related to Seth MacFarlane somehow. Like long lost 2nd or 3rd cousins.

I don’t understand how anyone could talk to Billy for more than 10 seconds and not immediately recognize he’s a total fraud. Just insane he was able to raise all that money.

Honestly the marketing behind the festival was genius. I get the appeal of IG and the concept of the festival was great. They were just a bunch of dumbasses who had no idea what they were doing.

In all reality, they took on a logistical nightmare that really didn't seem economically viable from the start.

The idea that you could only safely house 1000 people on Escobar's island is the first issue. So if your festival is only for 1000 to 2000 people, what are the ticket prices? $20k? How are you going to book a legitimate lineup with 400k as your main pool of money?

The numbers just don't add up.

I don't think its an example of great marketing, but just your average con man selling a pipe dream to morons, in his own words. I mean, to the credit of rich bros who bought tickets, they did start asking questions as the festival grew closer. All of the marketing materials had things laid out (villas, etc.), so it's not exactly like the thing was presented in a way that was completely outrageous.

I couldn't believe the gay man Andy taking one for the team. The poor restaurant lady going through 50k dollars to pay the local workers. Everyone hiding and getting out of dodge. Just a logistical nightmare.

Blink 182 was smart for bailing on the event. Kendall J. got $250,000 wired to her for a quick photo op promoting it? Crazy money being spent.

Saw both docs. I personally liked Hulus better. It did a better job of actually showing how much of a conman that Billy was. Netflix did a better job of showing how the festival was "put together". But after watching Hulu first then Netflix, I can only feel bad for the locals and the people working on the app. FuckJerry should have pulled the plug at least a month out when they knew for a fact that this thing could not have been done, but they didn't. They continued to perpetrate this lie and did everything they could to get rid of those people who were trying to expose the truth. Really is fascinating stuff, but a part of me loves that fact that this happened to the richest millennials that thought they were going to have this talking point to hold over people for a long time.

The event was going to happen whether or not FuckJerry pulled social promotion. Honestly I don't think there's a whole lot of blame to place on them. They did what their client wanted them to do, and I don't think they had a whole lot of insight into what was going on in the Bahamas.
