Not missing anything here. I'm quite aware of legally you have no ownership. But, as many others have said, if you live in a residential neighborhood it's more of an honor system or social contract or unwritten rule if you will.

Someone clears the spot in front of their house and puts a chair down and someone else moves it; dick move.

Look at it this way... you show up to a concert with lawn tickets. You pick a good spot and put down your blanket and then head over to the beer stand. While your gone some pack of nitwits comes and sits on your blanket. Dick move.

My final thought, there is no dibs on public parking. Thinking otherwise is childish. If people weren't coming into my restaurant because they were concerned with 'stealing someone else's public spot' I'd be livid.

What about during the summer, though? I'm fine with parking chairs when it is snowing, but in the summer when digging out your car isn't an issue? That's far more questionable to me.

I cant believe people dont abide by the chair or trashcan. We moved to a suburban area about 90 mins west of Philly and they did the same thing there. It was always courtesy to not park in a spot right in front of someone else's house, but once in a while people still did it. Everyone did the lawn chair thing when it snowed

to me, it all depends on the person taking the spot. people are talking about an old geezer going to the grocery store who dug out a spot.

what if an old geezer tosses a chair to take a spot? should he have his brakes slashed because he's not entitled to that spot?

Sounds like ppl in p-burg need to move somewhere sunnier if it ruins their day that they may have to shovel twice.

It baffles me that ppl think other people are rude for parking in a spot they dug out.

So just to confirm. You dig out at like 8 am, go to work with a lawn chair in the spot, and come back to your car nest at like 6 pm?

Someone with the group should always stay with the blanket. It's kind of like guys who think they can reserve multiple exercise machines/benches at the gym during busy hours. If you're not there, it's fair game.

one side agrees not to put a chair down in a space that they didn't clear out and that isn't directly in front of their dwelling

the other side agrees to respect the chair

neither side has to do it, but they do out of mutual courtesy and respect. some people don't have that courtesy or respect for their neighbors. and that's fine.

when I lived in the city it wasn't people who worked an 8-6 who utilized the chair.

it was 65-90 year old people that had to get their medicine from the pharmacy or pick up a social security check or get kidney dialysis. they were back within an hour or two

no, what i'm saying is that women and old people should be able to take whatever spot is closest to their residence, regardless of chairs.

    all dependent on the scenario.

As a lawyer, I expect better than this from you. It's obvious that different regions have different dealings when it comes to this sort of thing.

In the areas where people don't put out chairs or credenzas to save a parking spot it's not discourteous or disrespectful to take a public parking spot that's available.

I'm baffled that some people fail to see how it is rude. Yeah, no one's really entitled to the spot. And I'm not for seriously damaging a car that takes the spot. That's just dumb. But if you see the chair, you know why it's there. Go find another spot. Courtesy and neighborliness and all that.

To be fair, I do not support the parking chair as strongly during warm weather. Finding another spot close by is far less of a hassle then.

whatever you need to tell yourself, I get it. everybody wants to think that where they live is the vanguard for courtesy and mutual understanding. the evidence can't support everyone, though.

I get that it's a practice where you and a lot of people in this thread live, and if I lived in those areas I'd more than likely abide by whatever "social contract" there may be out of fear for something happening to my property, but that doesn't mean that I don't still think it's a 100% ridiculous practice.

people on ants just fight for the sake of fighting, it's hilarious

we'll keep abiding by the dig out/chair method, everyone else can have their free-for-all and we'll all be happy

it goes back to the social contract part of it; as a driver searching for a spot, I trust that the person who put the chair out put it there because they need access to their house without walking through a few blocks of snow.

as I said, I never put one down b/c a few extra blocks in snow is fine for someone of my age and health level. not true of a very sizable portion of pittsburgh residents

No no, that's not what I'm saying at all, please don't put words in my mouth. The point is that practices where I live are different, people are ok with the practices around here, don't think twice when a spot that they may have shoveled out is taken when they get home from work, and don't think twice about just finding another spot. It's not discourteous or rude to take an open spot where I live.
