Reserving Parking Spots (in public in the snow): Cool or Nay?

http://www.barstoolsports.com/chicag...ium=socialflow

Basically a woman stole a spot that someone dug out and then got her brakes slashed. I tend to think that type of behavior is acceptable. It is a pain in the ass to dig your car out. If you do dig it out the last thing you need is some dbag who come around a little bit later to steal your hard work.

just pull the pittsburgh move and put a lawn chair in the spot once you leave

if you dig it out, it's yours for a minimum of 24 hours

Chairs in the street/parking spots is ghetto as fuck. That being said, I think it would be common courtesy to not park in a spot somebody else cleared unless it was unavoidable.

Absolutely fucking not, it's public parking and everybody is in the same boat in that they're digging out. Fuck that.

If you dig out a spot and someone takes it, that someone should be subjected to a rocket launcher shot to their face. This is up to the discretionary of the person who dug out the spot. If they are nice, they may decide to give you a pass. If not, your face will be pulverized.

Dude, it's public parking!! If you don't have off street parking and live in a snowy area it's just something that comes with the territory.

cutting their brakes was a little harsh

i prefer burying their car in a mound of snow. doesn't cost the person anything for repairs but its still an eye for an eye type of deal

It means you should dig out your own space.

conversely you could make a pile of snow about 10 feet high about 5 feet away from the car, and about 5-7 feet closer to the nearest main road from the car

then call the city and request a snow truck come plow your road

that'll pack em in real good

Didn't know this was a thing. We don't have these problems in Colorado I guess.

And if it's public parking I don't see how you can call dibs.

Came here to post stuff like this. On Pittsburgh's South Side you're car will be messed with if you move someone's chair. It's serious business. Everyone knows that.

I'm just not understanding the principle here... so it snows a fuckton, person A digs out and leaves, person B needs to park and has no idea when person A may have dug out the spot but can't park there because they didn't dig out? That makes no sense. It's a public parking spot.

Agree 100% on both accounts. I had no idea this sort of thing happened until Slaurs mentioned it in the weather thread last week.

if it's like, a business district, then yea, park wherever

but if it's residential street parking, and clearly in front a person's house, i'm not taking that spot

it's just a dick move IMO

    yinz know what's up.

as a person born and raised in pittsburgh you NEVER move someone's chair for their parking spot. you also never move someone's chair the day before a parade on the side of the road.

good timing on this thread, i have been having such ethical dilemmas about this

i live on a street with on-street parking. i shovel out my car and all other opening spots that weren't taken by a car (if i don't, no one else will).
lately when i come home from work, my spot is gone, the extra spot i shoveled is gone, and a few empty spots have lawn chairs in them. too scared to take one of the reserved spots, so i have to park far away. not the end of the world, but im also a small girl walking alone in a ghetto area in like 6 ft of snow

i feel like an absolute asshole saving my spot though, because like scrock said... public parking, everyone is struggling. i don't want to make some elder person have to park far away

It's more of a neighborhood etiquette type thing. If you shovel the snow from the spot in front of your house, some jack hole shouldn't come and take it.

it's a social contract; I never put a chair down because I was a strapping young lad. my neighborhood was full of people that were like fuggin a hundred years old. if that geezer digs the spot out he can have it until july as far as I'm concerned

however, sometimes my roommate parks like an asshole so other cars can't park. when i get home, she will pull up so i can park behind her.

i guess it's the same principle as saving a spot, but i don't really feel as internally conflicted about doing it

You dig it, you park it but the theft of my dug out spot doesnt warrant a brake slashing. Just a little pee in the gas tank

Re: Reserving Parking Spots (in public in the snow): Cool or Nay?

'Stealing' a spot like that is a dick move and I would not be thrilled if someone did it to me. In fact unless the offending car had handicapped tags/plates I would likely cover it in water to freeze or just block it in with snow but actually harming the car is a bit harsh IMO.
