we BARELY made it around the first point with the tide Friday night...we knew we were pushing it, traffic sucked ass, and the sun was setting, tide was coming in, i got a little scared, we had to say "fuck it lets just get wet" at one point...there was water and sea foam you couldn't see through everywhere. stressful! ended up at mosquito creek saturday night, didn't want to head all the way to toleak, since a group of 20+ frat boys passed us on the trail and that was where they were headed. we heard from another couple of guys on the trail that the frat guys had camped at the beach before the point the night before and were settting off fireworks evidently. we actually saw one or two being set off from where we camped at mosquito. we headed back to jefferson cove sunday morning, hung out there for the day, and hiked back out (at the right time for the tide) yesterday morning...

i'm sore in places i didn't know existed, and i fucked my shoulders up pretty good...they were sore to begin with and then one wrong oomph on the rocks on the way out tweaked my right one something awful.

but, all in all, a good time. got to watch lots of bald eagles, mommas with their juveniles, which was way cool, saw an otter that had a staring contest with us monday morning, and lots of little critter tracks along the beach.

eta: the weather was great too, only rained sunday night while we were sleeping, and other than that just overcast, but not too cold. only good sunset was friday, and we couldn't really enjoy that one since we were scrambling over rocks.

I haven't been out that trail head in probably 15 years, but you describe it every bit like I remember it. I don't think you can hike the coast without the "Fuck it, let's get wet" comments. Rising tide and darkness can make one do desperate things. We had to camp on the side of a slope one time because of darkness and tides.

Frat boys on the trail can really disturb a trip for lots of hikers. Kind of like frat boys at a DMB show. Why go if you are going to talk the whole time? Why go out to nature and then blow shit up? It might have been fun to watch them cross Goodman Creek to get up to Toleak though. That sucker can run deep. It is what I call a testicular retraction crossing.

one of the frat dudes had a golf club as a trekking pole...heard as he fumbled a step "a 9 iron can provide only so much support"

we were so exhausted by the time we got to mosquito, we didn't want to go any further, frat boys or not.

and i really thought we might be spending the night on the rocks the way it was going, you can't see how many more rocks there are to climb as you make your way around, and there's a couple false beaches that give you hope you're done, and then MORE rocks...but we made it. the man had to talk me out of my panic a bit, but it's all good. it was MUCH better on the way out. the difference tide timing can make

This will be our 9th strait year heading to the gorge. 20+ in our group this year. What a blast spending time with friends and family at such a beautiful location.

i saw that too..but no. no fence-a-palooza for me. went once, wasn't impressed. you can't go anywhere, you're stuck in that little area all fenced in...the sun in your face for headliners. not that awesome. great weekend to leave town

Quick question: Won't be able to do Gorge this year due to being broke as hell, but what would you estimate the cost of going to the Gorge from PA would run me? Flights, car rentals, etc? Just getting estimates so that hopefully next year I can make it out there

True, they say general camping will never sell out. I was referring to the rules saying you must have a 'concert' ticket - sorry should have clarified- and that IDK how they enforce..

I went last year and it was pretty chaotic. I'm also into electronic music so the opener/headliner combo of Head and the Heart and Ghostland Observatory was awesome for me, but yes, it was super crowded. I didn't see anything on the lineup that just had me dying to go this year, so I'm going to pass as well. I'd rather save the $$ and put it towards a poster or shirt and beer at Dave.

Oh, I don't know. They didn't ask to see our tickets last year. And they didn't ask to see my concert tickets at Sasquatch when I went either.
