Re: Come Tomorrow vs Stand Up
I love the cohesion argument.
It carries no weight for me. I understand it, but growing up making and listening to mixed tapes (from mostly my dad's vinyls...I'm old & stuff), I'd make tapes of my favorite tunes from artists. These were much better than any "greatest hits" compilations, because they always included the objectively superior tunes (many of which were never deemed hits). Then I'd just mix stuff together from different artists, w/ little to no thought about what did or didn't connect them...no themed tapes, just shit I liked, cutting the fat. My favorite thing is live music and I've yet to see a band play and album front to back, so it's always a selection from their careers, often w/ covers thrown in.
It's just about listening to tunes I like. Cohesion is certainly not a construct, but it's not something that I've ever gotten hung up on. Do you folks find it difficult to listen to greatest hits albums? Or b-side collections? One of my favorite albums from Toad the Wet Sprocket is In Light Syrup...kinda of a template for the dream album I'd love to hear from DMB. It's one of their best collections of songs and I've never thought about the fact that were recorded at different times & places and from different sessions. The songs just sound awesome.
