This is pretty accurate. It's also like a restaurant - if you go the first time and get shit service, you're like "i'm never going back there." Meanwhile your next ten meals might have been fantastic. Meanwhile, if it's your favorite restaurant, and the 8th time is awful, you're like "eh - they're having an off night."
I flew Southwest like 3 days before their holiday fiasco - couldn't have been a better experience. On time with connections. bags made it. concise check in. pleasant people. You travel a few days later and have the worst experience of your life.
I probably agree that Delta is the best American airline. I fly Delta a lot. my company will request airlines to match status, but I earned my status on Delta. They're not markedly better than any other American airline.
And let's take it a step further. American airlines (in general, not American Airlines) flat out blow when you compare them to, say, Emirates or Etihad.
