Dave's carpe diem songs (YKN, Pig, LIOG, Billies) are always better when it's implied that death is lurking out there, so you'd better make use of the moment. Now. The moment he tells you what to literally do--"don't waste time trying to be something you're not," "PLEASE WAKE UP," "we've got to do much more than believe...," he gets a little preachy/cheesy.
The poster above is right, but I'd call it metaphors instead of image. "don't lost the dreams inside your head" is pretty literal, but "don't burn the day," "sitting on top of the world with your legs hanging free," and "spinning on the wind, a leaf fell from a limb" are all figurative moves. Dave seems to opt more for the literal these days.
All that said, I love DS. I wish the whole album had been this brave.
