You know what you hear is mostly a lack of Dave playing right? Or dave not playing like he used to. Most of the riff work on Big Whiskey Dave wrote, Tim just doubles or plays it live. That was the process, it's not really Tim himself. Plus listen to Tim from 98, most love it, but his tone was borderline ridiculous sometimes. And overall, his tone is usually where I have a problem with him. Not to mention, if you can't hear the heavy electric guitar throughout Crash and Before These Crowded Streets, I don't know what to say.
You are 100 percent right that heavy electric guitar doesn't define dmb's sound at all, but look to the way Dave is writing and playing right now, not Tim Reynolds. If Dave actually played, no one would be saying anything.
