Lets take it back to the year 2000......

when every song was great... what was your least favorite opening song back then and before then?

I was too young then but I would have to say crash would really suck as an opener back In the days when every song was good.

True Reflections was this time period’s worst song, then Jimi Thing, but people didn’t throw tantrums whenever Jimi Thing appeared in the set list. People did have reactions whenever True Reflections appeared.

I'm more talking about an opener.

I don't know of many true reflections openers. Maybe in the early days but I'm really talking 95-00 era. What would be some show openers that didn't sit so well at that time?

I wasn't around back then, but if I had to guess based on context probably Too Much (if that ever opened a show).

I know I used to get tired of hearing Don't Drink The Water open shows in that era. Love the song, just opened too much with it IMO.

My own question is tough to answer because everything was so good back then

But yeah, satellite seems to be a good answer. It seems like a very meh opener for that time period.

Honeslty, it's a pretty meh opener these days. But the thing is, you can get a whole lot worse to open a show then satellite.

Totally off topic I know, but since we're talking about 2000 again, those early Grey Streets are very rough to listen to because of Boyd. Deer Creek being the most obvious in my mind. Totally off tune.

prior to 2000, the general consensus was that Let You Down was far and away the worst DMB song.

the hard core fans disliked Satellite and Crash - Crash mainly for the 'crash girls' that were at shows that only knew that song and screaming bloody murder when they played it.

I’ve been listening to LT 39 and DMBlive 11/30/98 a lot lately and it’s funny to hear all the females in the crowd screaming. Listen to a show now and it sounds like a bunch of dudes in a shed.

Listen to Space Between from The Gorge if you really want to hear ladies screaming.

The OP is kind of a limited conversation as I don’t recall openers being much of a topic the way it is now. Maybe I am remembering incorrectly. An interesting question may be what songs people tired of seeing in general before 2000. With that I’d say top of the list was Too Much. Actually people did used to gripe about that when it closed. Too Much was the Shake Me Like a Monkey of the late 90s and early 2000s.

So Mich to Say, Crash Into Me, Satellite, Don’t Drink the Water, Jimi Thing were all tunes that got old.

Except Let You Down was very rarely played full band, nobody publicly cringed going to a show hoping they would miss Let You Down that night.

Kind of. I don't agree with the SMLAM comparison. They were overplayed especially in certain slots, but people didn't hate the songs themselves.

SMLAM is just a shitty song that also unfortunately closes shows. Too Much was a good song that just closed shows too often. There's a difference.

Yeah, there really weren't any bad songs up until '01 (with the exception of Boyd Tinsley's True Reflections). I honestly get sick of hearing #36 and Jimi on the early releases, but they aren't bad songs, just a little repetitive.

With that being said, to give a real answer to the OP, I'd have to say Proudest Monkey in the opening slot. Don't get me wrong, I love PM. But it is not a very exciting opener.

The hardcore fans online had no problem with it, but I recall more casual fans having (frankly pretty justifiable) WTF reactions to One Sweet World when it would open in those days. That jazz intro is great, but it's a pretty weird way to open a show, especially since 99% of the crowd had probably never heard it (many probably didn't even know OSW).

Stay was really the main song I remember people being annoyed with. It was played a lot, closed a lot, gets quite repetitive at the end, and of course the ladies.

It's funny...I've been on 2010 show listening binge lately. The Lilly White session songs are great. Grey Street was awesome, you can hear Boyd...good stuff.

Crush was by far the worst opener I have ever sat through. I love the tune, but the energy it opened the show at was super low in West Palm in '02. (Yes I realize the OP was meaning pre-ED, but still). Before that, I always felt that "Satellite" was an odd choice for a full band opener. Especially when they'd vamp the intro for a few extra bars.

I was pretty lucky with my 2000 openers for the three shows I went to - One Sweet World, Warehouse, Blue Water-->JTR so I can't complain there.

Even though it had more energy in the mid/late 90's, I'd think Proudest Monkey would be a pretty weak opener

Interesting. No matter where it has been played, I have NEVER seen a poor reaction for Crush.
