Neither party will split in the foreseeable future because that would be a death knell for whichever tries it first. Both sides would rather adhere to mutual dependence within their respective parties, if it means having a better chance of the other side not winning, than trying to do their own thing, whether that be Democratic progressivism, Democratic conservatism, Republican conservatism, or Trumpism.

This is why first past the post voting systems suck.
