Good on Bryson, I don't really have a strong opinion one way or another about him like most people seem to have. He seems like a decent guy and you have to admire his work ethic. Winning at a course like Winged Foot by 6 strokes is fucking impressive.

Also, girlfriend is meh

I'm sure my opinion of DeChambeau will change over time. I just like to see good players and people play well. That was fun yesterday.

I agree, but seeing Wolff and Bryson spray it everywhere and still boat race the field was jarring.

I might be wrong, but it just feels like DJ, Brooks, and Woodland won their Opens and the PGA at Bethpage with a more traditional approach.

I personally think at a tough setup they are far more fun to watch than a guy like Webb who really played well last week. Even if it is actually easier, it just looks like a constant high wire act.

DJ's driving was unreal at Oakmont and he said it was the reason he won, I agree about Webb. Not that Webb isn't an athlete but I always prefer watching the more powerful and athletic players at their best.

I really like watching the LPGA because of how they play.

Crazy that I’ll have a kid playing flag football and soccer next year, so my TV time will be limited. Far more likely to watch LPGA than a regular PGA event at this point.

Love the Players, the Match Play, and the majors.

DJ hit 64.29% of fairways in 2016. Brooks and Woodland were 70%+ the years they won. Bryson hit 41.07% of fairways this year.

The thing is, nobody hit a lot of fairways this weekend. Todd was the only player above 60% with the same 64.49% DJ hit at Oakmont.

Everyone was playing from the rough, which gave bombers more of an advantage than they typically would have since they had much easier approaches out of the thick rough.

It's really no secret as to why guys like Bryson, Brooks, DJ all the heavy/long hitters keep winning and are in contention...generally speaking the closer you are to the hole, the better. Yes playing to a certain distance for your approach obviously works, but these guys are so good that it doesn't really matter if they're 150 out or 80 out or 25 out after their drive, their wedges/short game is so precise that the difference in those distances matters so much less to them than it would for us.

I think this is a little off as it relates to DJ, yes he's always been insanely long off the tee but he absolutely hits to certain distances into the green. He tries to not leave himself numbers he doesn't like and hates hitting from 50 yards. I'm sure it's true for others but I just follow him far more closely than anyone else.

Comparing these guys to any of us obviously goes without saying but we can learn so much from them.

LPGA is pretty good. The tournament here always does gangbusters with attendance and sponsors. Great boost to the area. Only issue is that there are far more foreign players at the top of the field and it makes it a little harder to find a player to consistently root for and market like the PGA.

I think this is one of those things that is statistically true, but hard for some guys to apply because all they’ve know is Trackman numbers.

If junior golf goes even further into bomb and gouge play, you’ll definitely see it take over the tour.

It is less a predictor of good play because I generally still kinda stink, but ever since I started hitting driver as much as I can on the course (as opposed to playing for a distance with a long iron or hybrid on a mid to long par 4, say), my scoring has definitely gotten more consistent. Just might work for me because I am fairly long off the tee, and the shorter an iron/wedge is for my approach, the better for me as far as accuracy.

I still am a little hesitant with some touchier wedge shots from like 20-60 yards but personally I have success being as close as possible for my approach shot on a par 4 and going for the green in two on most par 5's.

That being said I think watching that sort of golf gets tiresome after a while. It's why I enjoyed Morikawa's win at the PGA so much, it felt like less of a bomb fest and more like a show of true precision and club selection/execution.

Not sure what you mean by this specifically, but going through recruiting with my son, I was surprised at how much length entered into things. I know a few kids who consistently shoot par or better and they are not getting recruited at all. I asked my son's future coach about them and he said "they can't hit the ball out of their shadow." Recruiting in golf is more like other sports than I realized. Its just like taking a shooting guard that is 4 inches taller than another player that shoots it a little better.

I get the rule is a rule, but I thought it was kinda BS that English lost his ball on hole #1 and had to re-tee for his 3rd. I'm not saying they just give him a free shot but I mean wtf, they got spotters out there for reasons and it was in the rough a few feet off the fairway. There were 15+ people looking for it and you can't find it so he gets penalized? Idk that just didn't seem very fair to me

I talk to some guys on at the range who have very good juniors. They still worry about course management. I don’t think Bryson and Wolff do and the math backs them up that every yard close to the hole gets them a better result.

You’re absolutely right about speed being king in recruiting. They’re all doing super speed and the range hosts tons of golf specific boot camps to build explosive power. I’ve seen kids smaller than my leg fly balls over the 286 sign at the end of the range.

The Barstool interview with Jack is really good. Amazing to me that they cut from the interview with him to an ad read for wiener numbing wipes.

    Peter Millar? Owens Mixers?

I was watching the Payne’s Cup while packing this morning. Did anyone else see the Gary Player interview? He starts talking about how good courses need to stop using water (true) the starts complaining about cutting down trees (trees make courses use more water), and closes by saying all good golf courses have tree lined fairways. They then go back to the booth, and the announcer says “They’ll never run out water here at Big Cedar Lodge”. Just crazy 90 seconds.i
