    Re: It's shark week, bitches

So as to the appeal of Shark Week.

To explain for me: When I was in grade school or even High School, summers seemed much longer than they do now. I remember spending many days with nothing to do. So I would go outside and make up games, walk in the woods and try to find activities to pass the time on long summer days when there was nobody around. One of the highlights of summer for me as a child was going down to my grandparents house at the Jersey Shore. They have owned a home there since 1960 and three generations of my family have spent every summer there since. I was no exception and every summer would spend two weeks with my grandparents at their house.

Obviously there is much to do, beach, boardwalk, fishing in the bay and bike riding. Night time was a different story. My Grandparents would often go to sleep around 9pm. That left me with just television as my companion for those two weeks. Nick-at-Night's summer block party kept me entertained for a good part of the summer, but it was that one special week a year on Discovery Channel that would have me glued to the television each night.

Shark Week. It had fascinating shows from shark attacks to shark biology. Everything a person could want to learn or know about those creatures in the ocean that make so many people fear the beach. Being at the shore only made it that much more appealing to me. So for me, it is a reminder of my childhood growing up that makes Shark Week so special.

I believe that many people share similar experiences growing up with Shark Week and that has made it such a popular week on Discovery now. Plus...it's Sharks.

turned it on a little earlier to "How To Not Become Shark Bait"..divers going under in clown costumes. really?

and this Shark After Dark thing might be the most ridiculous thing on TV, judging by the 5 mins or so of it I've watched

Thought Return of Jaws was awesome last night. Voodoo Shark could have been cool if they focused on the science of the bull shark's ability to live in both fresh and brackish water, but the whole swamp trash fishing family thing was just stupid and insanely fake. The real stuff they showed with the research team was pretty interesting though.

That Shark Attack one that just aired was lame. All stories were repeats from previous years. Same interview footage even. The only one that I didn't remember was the guy that was attacked close to Antarctica... that was pretty interesting.

Paul Walker on a boat and not driving a Nissan Skyline? I'm not impressed until Vin Diesel jumps out of his car mid air into the ocean and fights a great white.

They tag them the same way when they use the hydraulic platform that lifts the shark completely out of the water, and those sharks had basically no reaction whatsoever. I think last night's did because it was restrained in the water and could tell it was being handled.

Either way, two really good episodes last night. I still hated the corny reenactments in the first one though.

i dont think its a myth...i remember watching one a few years ago when they caught one and they were saying they only had a very small window to get things done or it would die.

they have to continuously swim so they dont sink to the bottom, and have to swim to get water into their gills. so if they are not moving, theyll suffocate.

They did a Mythbusters on this and said it's not really true. Also, this:

    http://dsc.discovery.com/tv-shows/sh...arks-drown.htm

    and this:

    http://www.amnh.org/learn/pd/sharks_...yth/index.html

    Which states:

    Quote:
Some sharks must swim constantly in order to keep oxygen-rich water flowing over their gills, but others are able to pass water through their respiratory system by a pumping motion of their pharynx. This allows them to rest on the sea floor and still breathe.

    Did you read that?

Nurse sharks (bottom feeders) dont need to move as they have a different breathing method.

But according to the Museum of Natural History, there are indeed some species of sharks that must keep moving in order to breath, some species that dont need to keep moving (some bottom feeders), and others that have been known to dwell in caves for short periods of times. So both are right, depending on which shark species one is referring to

And all sharks do have to keep moving in order to keep from sinking to the bottom.....

Some sharks need to constantly move; some don't. The old myth was that all sharks needed to constantly be in motion or die.

what are you even arguing here? the original question was asking if its a myth......its not when referring to certain species of sharks. it is when referring to other species.

and on the other hand....if they stopped swimming, they would sink to the bottom and die eventually, no?

The easy answer is ALL sharks need to have water continuously moving trough their gills or they will die.

16 8 ounce glasses a day (twice as much as humans). They have to breathe half of it into their lungs and drink the other half.
