Yea well take it with a grain or 2 of salt. I remember it being said that time bomb was a mix between the dreaming tree and halloween, and man did that turn out to be wrong to say the least.

Quality wise, no. But I can easily see why somebody would use that description.

Too Much really isn't much better lyrically than Shake Me.

which is why i say take it with a grain of salt. And for the record time bomb did not even remotely remind me of either dreaming tree or halloween.

I think it was a situation where fans wanted the new BW material to be Big 3 quality, and made comparisons to earlier songs even when it was really a stretch. I know I liked Everyday when it came out, and I enjoyed BW even more when it came out - for a week or so. Perceptions change when reality sets it.

But as has been said before, lyrical delivery accounts for a lot. Also, Too Much is supposed to be a quirky, word-at-a-time, lyrical mess. It is a frantic, chaotic, nervous song. That is why the lyrics work and are good. At face value they may seem like garbage - but contrasted against the music and delivered by Dave and you have a winning song.

SMLAM is Dave attempting to write a funky sex song. The music sounds over produced, Dave's lyrics aren't very unique or catchy, even with his delivery and music.

This is why it is important to take lyrics and put them in perspective to the song and vocal delivery.

I hold a lot of value on boyd having a more prominent role and it sounding full.

I was reminded at Hartford night 2 about how important boyd is to the band. I'm glad to hear tim is on background as well.. they've turned tim down this year except on his parts.. sounds much better

I can see why that makes sense, actually

Of course, Time Bomb is a bottom five DMB tune, but I can see where that description comes from, loosely

Taste is subjective, that's why it's personal.

Anyway, Dave has been writing funky sex songs his whole career. Look at some old reviews of BTCS. People said the same thing about "Rapunzel".

shake me me's music is also really really good, the cheesy god awful lyrics and slight overproduction take away from the song, but musically its a gem

i have a strong feeling the tower of power guy may be on that funk track, and people should be pumped for funk haha

interesting read (I'd like to abstain from all new album news/songs, but Can't Stop myself). Not sure I put too much stock in this "first impression" since apparently Lillywhite is speaking to him non-stop while the music is playing.

This descriptions of the "twists and turns" (or whatever) of the music reminds me of Seven (I like Seven a bunch).

I'm having a hard time with the "prog rock" type descriptions, when what we've heard (Mercy, Guacho, Sweet) seems like straight-forward DMB. Plus, there is the solo song. Also, if the album is the rumored 55 minutes with 11 songs and one being about 9:30 minutes, there can't be too many other "long" songs, or we will also get quite a few "short" songs. A minor thing, but I would love something approaching the 1-hour plus length of BTCS!

Anyway, it will be an interesting summer and early Fall.

If there's one song I'll groan at hearing at a show, its Time Bomb. That said, the crowd participation on the Time Bomb intro of Two Step in Hartford made it tolerable.

I am in the minority of fans that believe we already have a big 4 as I put lws right up there with ANYTHING in the bands catalogue. That said I have to say I'm thrilled withe this guys "review" if this is in the same ballpark as any of the first 4 I'll be even more ecstatic.

I have real hope for the first time in years. Don let me down DMB.

TB intro on Two Step is lazy and annoying. Dave should continue the awesome improv intros. 07 saw a lot of great intros. TB intros make me cringe bc it's a terrible song's lyrics tied in with a staple.

Re: Review from someone who heard the new album

I think people get waaaay too hung up on wanting to compare everything new to something old. Every time we get a snippet of music or new information, people want to immediately know 'What old song does it sound like?' 'Does it sound like UTTAD/Crash/BTCS?'

People love things that are comfortable. We're comfortable with the Big 3 music so we immediately want to know if anything new sounds like or compares to it. Stop trying to measure new music against the old - just judge it for what it is. In this summary, (as the author said - it shouldn't even be treated as a review) he comments about a song being 'epic' like 'Bartender/Dreaming Tree.' People immediately gravitate towards that. Then when the song comes out and it doesn't sound like either of those, people will get disappointed, even though he NEVER said it did sound like them, he simply used them of examples of past 'long' or 'epic' style songs the band has done. The new album also has a song that's long and has a lot of twists and turns, and the similarities probably end there.

This post personally makes me even more excited for the album than I was. I don't want another UTTAD, Crash, or BTCS. I want a new album. This author's opinion seems to be that the new album has all of the hallmarks that we love about DMB, but still sounds like nothing they've ever done before. That's exactly what I want to hear!

If they never gave us that studio video of "it needs that pace" song would people actually hate so much on Time Bomb? I dont think so. I think it would decrease the hate by half.

Time Bomb is a decent song until Dave starts screaming...

Let's stop discussing Too Much. It was SMLAM+SMTS+SUAD that was compared.

I'm excited to hear that mash-up though. I love each one of those songs so I'm pretty excited to hear what some new funk will bring.
