Agreed, I think both of these guys are fantastic in The Americans. And Keri Russell holds her own too.

Damn, hoping I like it a little more, we usually have similar TV views though.

I'll end up watching House of Cards but I'm really over the whole "politicians are corrupt" thing.

For me it's more about the hope that talent like Spacey and Fincher could elevate the genre, but it doesn't sound like that has totally happened.

It's not a bad show, it's just utterly ridiculous at times and fails to really break out of some of the genre tropes that dominate modern political entertainment. The show looks fantastic, mostly well acted (the guy who plays Peter Russo should get an emmy nomination), and pretty entertaining. It's also frequently absurd and suffers from the same problem as another recent political drama, Boss: there's rarely anyone to root for.

You should definitely watch it, though. The pilot is great.

2 episodes in to House of Cards. I'm liking it so far, though it seems like all of this wheeling and dealing is happening far too quickly and easily. The biggest thing this show has going for it is Kevin Spacey. I think I'd watch him in just about anything. Currently hating the wife's (Robin Wright) story line. And I really like Kate Mara in this, though her storyline so far has been done a million times. Definitely keeping my interest overall though.

Mara's story becomes a little more interesting, as does his wife's as plotlines start to intersect. IMO, Russo becomes the most compelling figure on the show.

Also worth mentioning: Fincher's involvement ends after episode 2.

yea, although there's still a long roster of industry names that follows him, including James Foley, Joel Schumacher and Carl Franklin (and I think one guy whom I recall directing a lot of Sopranos eps).

Good to know. Too bad about Fincher, hoping I don't notice a huge drop off in the directing aspect.

    Also, Kate Mara is gorgeous.

The subsequent episodes follow a similar visual style but aren't as well crafted overall. Hard to pin down the root cause, though.

Just saw a ratings report from last night. 2.5 Men and TBBT continue to easily get almost 15mil viewers, meanwhile both Community and Parks & Rec got all time series lows. I really feel like fucking smacking people sometimes. Yea alright, we can tell the difference with Dan Harmon being gone. The worst episode of Community still looks like a Mensa chat session compared to the "best" of 2.5 Men.

I just can't get all the way into Game of Thrones. I love the Machiavellian interactions and power plays and I'll get really into it for a minute, then it'll switch to some dumb ass fantasy shit that just takes me right back out of it. It's unbelievably frustrating.

Watched the first two seasons with another couple, and have plans to continue on with the third with them, but my interest wanes ever more as the series goes on.

It does make for a good drinking game though. Any time you hear "winter is coming" or "a Lannister always pays his debts", you drink. There are a few others we drink to that I can't quite recall right now. It's been a while since our last gathering.

Matthew, if you don't like this season, bail. Doubt it will get much better in terms of story than this season and maybe next depending on where they split the source material. If they bisect it where I think they will, there's no chance in hell you won't be back next March.

I'm not a fantasy guy at all but the show is fantastic.

The story is great. It's just that one damn story arc with all the fantasy crap that I hate. I just don't feel it's necessary at all to make the story complete/intriguing. It's just dumb. That arc could contribute on its own without that aspect.

What have you seen? I'd recommend Justified, The Shield, Deadwood, Rome or Magic City of you haven't seen any of those. Boss is fun but a little absurd.

Seen the bold. Couldn't get into Rome. What's Magic City about?

I've seen most of the heavy hitters, like Wire, Sopranos, House, Dexter, Breaking Bad etc...
