If we look at AFTW, I would guess that Belly Belly sticks. Sweet and If Only on occasion. Drunken Soldier as a rare play. From this album, I’m going to guess Idea and Can’t Stop since they’re 12 years old and Sam Cop. Virginia on occasion. Truthfully, I’m not sure how many more. Black & Blue and Again & Again have seemingly already been shelved

A fair barometer of what?

Surely you're not saying that what sticks live is a fair barometer of what's a good song. Because Dave has shit taste in his own music.

You kind of alluded to this, but it's possible for it to be good music without sounding like albums from the mid 90's. I get that's why many of us started listening to the band, but to expect to hear UUTAD/Crash/BTCS is one of the most naive views that many on this board has. I think people get too caught up in hearing the old band in the new songs versus just enjoying the music... which is why it's so polarizing.

That being said, I personally enjoy listening to this album (overall) more than AWFTW, BW, Stand Up, and Everyday. I still wouldn't call it a masterpiece, but overall a very good a listen with only a couple of songs that I don't like.
I get what you're saying, but for me the band's sound is almost unrecognizable. Obviously 'Everday' was their first departure from the sound we fell in love with. But they have made music since then that still feels like a DMB song. 'You Never Know' is one that comes to mind that still has the same feel, although that's pretty old in itself at this point.

I just think it's hard for me at this point to keep saying they are my favorite band, when they haven't had an album since the early 2000's that did much for me. They're pleasant and catchy, but the songs seemingly have no depth anymore. And what's worse, they're still capable of it but the producers they've chosen ruin their sound in the studio. Seriously, Idea of You and Shotgun are both great songs. Yet they have Mark Batson produce them...

I agree. It's certainly not a DMB song...sounds straight from Some Devil (hear a lot of Baby in it), but it's the best from this album IMO.

ADDING TO MY BEST OF MIX IMMEDIATELY
Samurai Cop: Loved it live, love the studio version
Can't Stop: thought it was good live, studio version is much better
That Girl Is You: Not sure why this is getting so much hate, it's my favorite on the album (so far)
    Come On Come On

    SOLID SONGS
    She
Virginia In The Rain: I hated this live, I like the studio version
    Again and Again
Black and Blue Bird: Another one that I did not like live. The studio version is changing my opinion

    NEEDS A FEW MORE LISTENS
    Here On Out
    Do You Remember
    Come Tomorrow

    REALLY DON'T LIKE THESE

    My ‘Come Tomorrow’ Review:

I know a lot of people don’t want to hear this, but you can see how Dave’s priorities when writing music have changed drastically and I believe after this album we are going to see more solo work from Dave like ‘When I’m Weary’ and ‘Virginia in the Rain’, which I’m pumped for him. You can tell he is tired of writing music for a band that is not the same as it was from 1992-2000 (no Boyd, no Roi), he wants to go solo. That being said, it’s just strange with no Boyd on album, and to go further why is Jeff Coffins array of woodwinds not integrated more?? There are no standout sax solos or outros, I feel like that’s what makes the DMB sound soo badass, a mix of rock and jazz. That’s the disconnect from the DMB sound we all love and want, and instead they fill background with lame orchestra movements. The song complexity we hear in all the tracks on Before These Crowded Streets is missing because sounds like we only have Carter and Dave running the show in the studio for this album. Need more salt man. But through the fog I think we have some good tracks on this album:

    1. ‘Samurai Cop’ (⭐️⭐️⭐️)3/5
    - great build up through song
    - good solo from Timmy
    - love lyrics and melody
    - need more volume on sax and horn

    2. ‘Can’t Stop’ (⭐️)1/5
    - again need more activity on sax
    - Could be more funky
    - lyrics & melody are ok
    - don’t like vocal effects at chorus
    - will be good live version

    3. ‘Here on Out’ (⭐️⭐️⭐️) 3/5
    - don’t like orchestra, would prefer woodwind background fill, with keys
    - would like some bongo from Carter
    - too produced, would like it to have campfire feel
    - I know this song with grow on me

    4. ‘That Girl Is You’ (⭐️) 1/5
    - love the intro, wish it segued into a different faster paced melody to make song more complex.
    - like the vocals from Dave, good textures and range
    - again, needs sax and horns on second half of song, kept waiting for the song to take me away on alternate melody.

    5. ‘She’ (⭐️⭐️) 2/5
    - sounds like mid nighties alt rock
    - song has more complexity than other tracks on album
    - Stefan shines through on this track
    - Timmy has potential for great wa-wa solo live on this track

    6. ‘Idea of You’ (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️) 4/5
    - best overall Carter rhythm on album
    - studio cut is clean
    - love the lyrics & melody on this track
    - sounds most like old DMB sound
    - great horn and sax influence
    - song has good complexity

    7. ‘Virginia in the Rain’ (⭐️⭐️⭐️) 3/5
    - love the effect on keys
    - studio cut is great
    - good lyrics and melody
    - again would like more sax

    8. ‘Again and Again’ (⭐️⭐️) 2/5
    - Stefan shines through again here
    - not fan of orchestra again
    - where is Jeff Coffin!???
    - lyrics and melody are ok
    - this is a track I think will be a different live version that will grow on me

    9. ‘Bkdkdkdd’ (⭐️⭐️⭐️) 3/5
    - love this snippet, hope they elaborate in live shows.
    - this has true DMB DNA

    10. ‘Black and Blue Bird’ (⭐️⭐️) 2/5
    - studio version is clean
    - good sax influence
    - Carter shines through
    - good complexity, but a tad too bright

    11. ‘Come On Come On’ (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️) 4/5
    - heavy melody that carries track
    - good complexity
    - I think this will be great live
    - this is a roll down the windows while driving on highway song
    - don’t like orchestra, use Jeff & Rashawn instead with Jeff outro
    - lyrics and melody great

    12. ‘Do You Remember’ (⭐️⭐️) 2/5
    - lyrics and melody are decent
    - upbeat song that could jam more
    - good guitar riff, but get horns more involved
    -love Timmy’s classical guitar solo
    - would like to hear Carter on bongos

    13. ‘Come Tomorrow’ (⭐️) 1/5
    - lyrics and melody are ok
    - too structured
    - wish they jammed second half of the song, Carter could really build it up
    - get rid of orchestra damnit, ruins it
    - turn up the horns
    - I dig the female vocals

    14. ‘When I’m Weary’ (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️) 4/5
    - beautiful melody
    - new sound, new chapter for Dave, think we will see more of this from him in the future.
    - I could see a whole solo album from him with melodies like this.

Re: Rank the studio versions of the songs on "Come Tomorrow"

    Here's my initial thoughts:
    Idea of You - 9/10
    Again and Again - 9/10
    Come Tomorrow - 8.5/10
Come On Come On - 8.5/10
    Do You Remember - 8.5/10
Black and Blue Bird - 8.5/10
    Samurai Cop - 8/10
    Here on Out - 8/10
    bkdkdkdd - 8/10
    She - 7/10
Virginia in the Rain - 7/10
    When I'm Weary - 7/10
    Can't Stop - 6/10
That Girl Is You - 3/10

Goes without saying that I'm loving this album! Surprised so many people are hating on the song Come Tomorrow though! Only song I can't stand is That Girl is You. Terrible vocal. And Idea of You is my favourite song, but there's one little bit of the drum part that's out of time and it kills me!

Great job DMB, and great job producers...

    So far...

She (4.5/5.0 stars) - best song on the album
    Samurai Cop (4.0/5.0 stars)
That Girl Is You (4.0/5.0 stars) - i'm surprised more people don't like this one. Totally different Dave sound.
The Idea of You (4.0/5.0 stars) - sounds better than the 4 or 5 times I saw it live

Since they put a studio version of The Idea of You and Can't Stop on this album, they should have put a studio version of Cornbread on it too.

Studio Corn Bread, along with studio Write A Song, was released as a bonus track on the European version of Big Whiskey & The GrooGrux King.

Re: Rank the studio versions of the songs on "Come Tomorrow"

Alright, here's where I stand after several listens:

    Again and Again
    Virginia in the Rain
    She
    Samurai Cop (Oh Joy Begin)
    Idea of You
    Come On Come On
    Here On Out
    That Girl Is You
    Do You Remember
    Can't Stop
    When I'm Weary
    Black and Bluebird
    Come Tomorrow

A few random thoughts, in no particular order:

1.) I didn't include bkdkdkdd as it's more of a 'commercial' than a song, but in terms of how much I enjoy it I'd probably put it between SC and IOY.

2.) The production on this album is really pretty good, save a few head-scratching decisions (like totally butchering IOY, or abruptly ending B&BB). I was lukewarm on "She" after the first few live performances, but it's awesome on the album.

3.) GIVE US A FOLLOW UP ALBUM!!!

Re: Rank the studio versions of the songs on "Come Tomorrow"

    Good:
    - Do You Remember: reminds me of Old Dirt Hill, or like a nostalgic version of Tripping Billies - different songs I know, don't kick me in the head for this
    - Virginia In The Rain: like others I didn't like it live, loving it now
    - That Girl Is You: I love the song, not the studio version, it's just too raw
    - Come On Come On: guilty pleasure, I feel bad for enjoying it with those lyrics
    - Again and Again: great DMB sound, will gladly hear it live

    Average:
    - When I'm Weary
    - Black and Blue Bird
    - Here On Out
    - Samurai Cop
    - Can't Stop
    - Idea of You

    Bad:
    - She
    - Come Tomorrow
    - bkdkdkdd

I'm fine with the new sound, I just wish Dave would write better songs.

Honestly, I just wish the band would go instrumental from here on out. For example I tried to enjoy COCO...it sounded cool but the lyrics were worse than terrible.

    10 Come Tomorrow
    11 Come On Come On
    12 She
    13 Can't Stop
    14 Do You Remember
    Pretty similar to my rankings:

    1. Virginia in the Rain
    2. Again and Again
    3. Samurai Cop
    4. Here On Out
    5. When I'm Weary
    6. Black and Blue Bird
    7. Idea of You
    8. Come On Come On
    9. Come Tomorrow
    10. That Girl Is You
    11. She
    12. Do You Remember
    13. Can't Stop

This is coming from someone who hasn't seen the band since 2009 and hardly ever listens to any live recordings. In fact, I'd probably only heard Samurai Cop, Bob Law, Virginia in the Rain, and B&BB two to three times apiece before the album release. Having the most familiarity with Can't Stop and Idea of You, I'm disappointed that I consider about half the album to be sandwiched between them from a quality standpoint. But I'm also encouraged to find Idea of You in the middle of the pack.

Re: Rank the studio versions of the songs on "Come Tomorrow"

It seems more like a Dave solo record than a band effort to me. I love a few moments in songs but don't know whether I am in love with any full songs. That being said here's my ranking:

    She
    When I'm Weary
Be Yourself...I'll put the full song in
    Black and Blue Bird
    Again and Again
    Do You Remember
    Idea of You
    Come on Come on
    That Girl is You
    Here On Out
    Can't Stop
    Samurai Cop
    Come Tomorrow
