Re: ***Official Bourbon Thread***

My birthday is Thursday, a perfect excuse to go out and try to find some great bourbons to drink. My fiancee, bless her heart, told me she was going to try to get me a bottle of "that Pappy bourbon you were looking for" at New Year's(23yr). I let her google for about 2 minutes before her mind was blown at the scarcity and ~$1500 price tag.

Less demand and excess supply equals lower prices. That or they will just age it longer instead of opening the barrels and bottling a finished product.

I highly doubt there will be a shortage or a huge increase of prices. If demand continues to grow companies will just age the bourbon a few less years for their 'normal' blends and then bottle the 8/10/12 year old blends at a higher costs. Plus, when certain liquors get in fashion so to speak many drinkers just change their preference and go with a cheaper brand or type.

If anything the ethanol demand will do more for a bourbon price increase due to corn prices than actual bourbon demand.

Is anyone else seeing a shortage of W.L. Weller? I am having a hard time finding it. Also, I picked up the Courtney & Woods 10 Year, and it's pretty tasty.

Still haven't found any W.L. Weller, I guess everyone has found out that it is the same recipe as Pappy. For the price, there is no better Bourbon, in my opinion. Any one else having any luck with the Sazerac Bourbons?

Nice. I finally found a store here that has a decent selection. They've got Blanton's for $38 too, which is the lowest I've seen.

Interesting. 3 glasses and I'm not sure how to rank this. The nose is a little hot to me, followed by the sweet honey taste into a somewhat spicy finish. Its good and I'll probably save a third of the bottle for my bar but I just don't think I'll be getting a bottle again anytime soon.

I recommend to taste, wouldn't buy a bottle.

Yes, went through a couple of bottles at the Chicago Caravan. I dig it but it is a little sweet. Because it's the single barrel, it has more of a punch, though.

Been my drink of choice for years now. Thing that sucks it is getting more notoriety lately and the prices go up accordingly.

Yeah, I am a makers person at a bar too - mainly because most places offer that, Knob Creek, Basil Hayden or Woodbridge and I much prefer makers.

In all honesty though try the Elijiah Craig, blows them all away and the bottle is mid range price at a liquor store but you rarely find it in a bar.

Also, while not technically a bourbon try Jack Daniels Silver Select if you can. Tough to get because it is export only (meaning you have to get it from outside the US because of APV restrictions) but holy damn is that a good whiskey. You can get it through the mail pretty easy from a friend, occasionally on eBay and some duty free websites will mail it to you but you pay out of your nose that way.

Good to know about the Elijah Craig. I sent a list to my family with bottles I'd like for Christmas/Birthdays and EC 18yr was on there but I've yet to try the 12. Maybe I'll pick one up tomorrow.

I'm kind of kicking myself for not buying any Weller when I was in Kentucky for Thanksgiving (my parents live there). On Black Friday I bought a suitcase full of Goose Island Bourbon County Stout and did have room for an actual bottle of bourbon too.

When I went back a couple weeks ago I didn't see any Weller, but I did grab a Willett Pot Still Reserve which is fantastic.

From the Sazerac lines I've only had Buffalo Trace, and Blanton's which is of course delicious.

I actually did a side by side with the Willett and Blanton's the other night.

The Blanton's is smoother, more floral, and a bit more subdued (not unlike Basil Hayden's IMO) and the Willett is much bolder, with caramel, vanilla, and oak. Both great bourbons no doubt with their own characteristics.

Bulleit for sure. My favorite bourbon for that price - Trader Joe's has it for $22.99 which is a great deal.

Costco started carrying 1.75L of Bulleit Rye (fantastic for Manhattans but not a bourbon) for $31.99 which is a steal as it's usually the same price point as the bourbon. I'd love it if they started carrying handles of Bulleit bourbon for that price.

The selection out here on this stupid island sucks so usually if someplace has Bulleit, it is the Rye.

I'm going to try to find a ride later today to the store and pick up a single barrel or small batch of something!

Ended up getting EC 12 and Jefferson's Reserve. Holy shit I almost worked a sweat trying to uncork the Elijah Craig.

But the rewards are oh so good! Makes me wish I wasn't drinking cheap vodka today.
