The energy was dead for Captain, a song that maybe 5% of the crowd knew??? I'm shocked.

That's really disappointing and I am sure is part of Dave's thought process when making setlists. 95% of the people curently at his shows would bawk at spending time on Dmb message board discussing the setlists.

In the recent interview that Dave did, it sounded like he would prefer quiet crowds but I guess that's a totally different thing. Like he said, he knows what butters his bread. Disappointing for people like us that enjoy the rarer stuff.

The eyebrow thread? Please tell me that's not true. I made the mistake of posting a pit picture in 2016 and not watermarking it, and I fear for where it's ended up, and what people have done while looking at it. Bleh.

5% of Lawn or Pavillion? If Lawn then I wouldn't be shocked, its a deep track off an album from 16 years ago. If Pavillion for someone willing to shell out that money, you should be a big enough fan to recognize it.

Captain had 0 energy when I last saw it at Irvine in 2015, and Herbie Hancock was playing on it. Horrible show flow around that point and felt like everything died, but we were lucky enough to get that song...

Captain had no response because I would say 15% of the crowd knew it. All of us were dancing and singing but they never play it so casual fans don’t know it

Did the Captain from last night have the reprise like it did from Alpine 2015? That was a nice thing to see happen in person, but otherwise the song is definitely one that I'd be ok avoiding in Chicago.

I was in one of the first pavilion sections behind the pit, had a solid group of hardcores around that shared my excitement but my girlfriend quickly pointed out the horde moving down the aisles for the bathroom; I shrugged and told her those are the people here for Crash

Captain would get reactions if it was played more than 40 times in 16 years. Again look at the frontman for abnormal numbers of plays for key songs

People don't react and then talk through all quiet/slow songs.

It's just the nature of live music. People are fucking apes that make loud noises in response to loud sounds.

Captain is a show killer for casual fans looking to have a good time

We all appreciate the song because of where it came from & it’s studio version, but like VITR, it just kills the energy live. Experienced this on 9/12/15, the last day it was played before it was liberated the other day. You could feel the energy die, everyone went to the bathrooms, and people were talking. Not a great experience. Love the song though.

    It's a viscous cycle.
Dave doesn't play a certain song very much over a period of time or ever like Captain.

Then it becomes rare and casual fans forget or never really know it.

Dave decides to play it and the casuals(most of the crowd) doesn't recognize it and head to the beer line/restroom.

Dave sees the lukewarm reception and decides to shelve it.

    Repeat.

People will usually be good for a quiet song in the E1 spot. Probably cuz they are expecting something like that to happen.

#40 seems to be the only quiet song that’ll shut people up...BUT, I dunno if that’s true anymore (outside of SPAC) cuz he never friggin plays it.

Let You Down at Deer Creek in 2015 was a moment that you could feel the whole building stunned in disbelief at what was going on...and it hadn’t been played in 17 years. But it’s also part of their most known/popular album.

Anyone else think these setlists are weak

Proudest Monkey, Big Eyed Fish, Digging a Ditch, Old Dirt Hill and Lover Lay Down usually do well.

Trying to think of ones beside pop love tunes or that don’t get into a louder jam or Dave wailing part.

    Bad word for that.

My point is no song unless it’s an album year should have way more plays than others. Idc what song it is

There should be about even number of plays.

Captain could have gotten played 20 times a tour for the last 15 years and no one would care. It's not that exciting of a song.

This is what I'm driving at. The casual masses don't give a shit what slow song is being played, so maybe throw those of us who do care a frickin bone more often.
