Re: New Album Coming This Summer
While I know this will never happen, I think there's a simple solution. In my personal opinion, this band would sound so much better if they took some time to reevaluate the way they play. Don't play so aggressively, slow down, start playing with more dynamics like they used to, and then the rest will fall into place from there. I was just listening to Live Trax 11 and Bartender is so much more impactful and powerful when played slower and without Dave screaming every chance he gets. Why does Dave push his voice so much? Easy. Between Carter's heavy hitting, Rashawn and Jeff screaming to be the loudest, Tim's shredding and the warp speed they play now, Dave has to push his voice harder to either be heard or keep up. I notice this with my own band. When I can't hear myself very well and they are playing louder and faster it's harder to keep up vocally. Which puts more strain on my vocal chords and then I lose my voice easier. Why does Carter play so aggressively? See above and adjust.
As for #40, I'm alright with Dave finally writing some lyrics to it. If they are good and fit the same feel he's always sung with then why not? The whole lyrical improv thing was never a big selling point to me. I remember in 2000 really loving the new tunes, especially Grey Street, but it drove me bonkers that I couldn't sing along with it. Sure, once in a while he'd find that sweet spot and something magic might come out, but more often than not it was just stream of conscious to fill out an unfinished song. #40 has always been a nice little song, but not because of the lyrics. That melody, guitar riff and the emotion Dave would put into it are what drove it for me.
