Re: Bottom line? F$@% the trumpet

Agree that it sounds like he is playing way outside the jam on that clip, but I'd be interested to hear how it sounds from someone not in the pit on the rail standing directly in front of his horn. I don't hear anything in there that sounds like an overblown squeal or unpleasant in any way.

    https://www.periscope.tv/TshumpDMB/1YqGojrXZolKv

10:50 - 10:54'ish - If he could keep this going, it would be awesome

10:57- 11:05 - time to squeal.. what he's doing is actually technical and cool, but so redundant. It's like his 'go 2' move in every jam, gets tiring to hear it in every song

11:06 - 'I'm out of ideas' energy & jam dies. Literally noticeable by him, Jeff, and the crowd. He can't fill the sound! God it's bad. It's even more frustrating when Dave builds up the crowd & band with energy, hands over the slot, and Rashawn just takes a dump right in it.

For the record, I played trumpet for years and love the instrument. Also love jazz, but Rashawn, no, he can't carry the music, he just randomly plays things.. there is no build up, etc. There has been, in a few exceptions like Break Free Fenway.
Thank you. He is single handedly ruining it. Its painfully obvious too.

Yeah he goes a little out in the middle of that solo, but that snippet is full of great Jazz vocabulary. Ya know, jazz? That thing that people have been complaining about being missing from the band's sound for the better part of a decade.

I'm a musician (I even papers), and I think Ross plays fine there. He definitely pushes a little beyond what he's capable more often than he should sometimes, but he's a lot better than folks give him credit for.

As if telling someone they have brain worms is any better.

Majority agree his sound doesn’t fit the band. There’s always someone who wants to be different or play devils advocate.

I like your posts Bmwm3oz. Thank you.

My husband calls RR "Honker". Whenever he starts a solo he goes "Honnnnk Honk Honnnnk Honk"; my kids join in, it's funny.

On the other side of the fence, it is not funny when Honker comes on and I am listening with headphones. There are no family "honk honk" laughs and the sound is not amusing to my ears.

I am happy Dave Matthews Band is still touring though and I know rr isn't going anywhere. So I just play it over speakers and let the cam honk honk honk along with the chesty no instagram comment accepting trumpet player.

Saying someone has brain-worms is at least somewhat funny. You really think anyone who disagrees with this is playing devils advocate or trying to be different? That's pretty ridiculous

I don't think a majority of fans think he doesn't fit. Most Ants are stuck in 2004, and obsess over what they used to sound like, which is fine. I actually think a lot of new fans like him.

I feel like there’s a constant need to engage in hyperbole to the furthest possible extent when it comes to this topic (and others). I’m not trying to be one of those “if you don’t like it then leave” type people, but so many of these extreme takes can be alienating.

See, you know what I’m getting at. I’m not saying he sucks at his instrument, I’ve always said he’s good at trumpet. And from a technical standpoint, he’s very good. He just isn’t a Jeff Coffin, Warren Haynes, Hamilton type who can build a solo and carry it all the way to the finish line the way those guys can. Similar to Tim, he can’t really do it either.

I feel like Tim more often than not throws crap at the wall until something sticks and then goes nuts off of whatever he lands on. It works sometimes, sometimes it doesn't. In regard to having my opinion matter I am musician but it isn't my main job and I can't shred to save my life

... Moreso in D&T, he has more set structure in DMB

Don’t put too much energy into it, that’s a pretty obvious way for someone to try to bluff people into thinking they have musical sensibilities.

I would direct people to recent versions of Crush for those saying RR can't build a solo. Also its only people on these boards that dislike him, not the majority of fans.

He does good on Crush, but how often does he have a solo like that? When he plays mellow, I like him a lot. I just wish he would do it more often instead of the high pitched squealing.

How many times does it need to be said that exceptions don't make the rule? Fenway '06 Break Free, he does great. There are examples of him doing a good job, but it's very rare. Been said on this forum at least nine billion times.

As far as the majority of the fans thing - they may not say it, but they show it. Rashawn does not get the reactions Jeff and others do.

Trumpet should never be on every song. Fuck, even Miles Davis would agree. Ross needs to sit out on the tunes he doesn't belong (90%). Say Goodbye and Granny have been spared but thats it.

Crush is good because he's using a mute. That's the only way I enjoy the trumpet with DMB's music is with that particular mute, which I believe he only uses on Crush. The rest of it is god awful and overbearing. The sax has been largely cut out of this band because Rashawn is always playing over top of it and there's no more violin now too. Launch that trumpet into the sun.

Those aren't the only two songs he steps off stage for.

How many times does it have to be said that he isn't going anywhere and people should stop their incessant bitching? It's literally the same complaints over, and over, and over, and over. Hate the trumpet that much? Don't listen to new recordings or go to shows now. I just can't imagine constantly complaining about the same thing in the same way, what do people hope to achieve?

Sometimes the level of DMB authority people seem to feel they have around here is just astounding.

I love how this page on the thread started with someone talking about there only being "shallow criticisms" on here then ended with this detailed breakdown of the issues that many have with RR's playing.

Thank you for sharing this and the link to exactly what you're referring to. I agree 100%. I've heard that same misplaced, flat trumpet solo a hundred times. It kills any momentum in the song every time.

Dmb played years and years without trumpet. The best DMB sound was pre trumpet. It’s such an unnecessary element and his playing style is not good. I can’t believe some of y’all like his stuff.. I mean he has ruined tunes like grey street and rapunzel.
