I'm so sick of people telling me that Walk Around the Moon is where it's at when something like ABC is left to wilt.

Early Home and Drive Me Away existing and just sitting on the shelf is unacceptable! I really miss the Dave from even the Batson Sessions era. Everything he writes nowadays seems almost void of genuine emotion and like he’s just checking off boxes to say he wrote a new song...That prob doesn’t make much sense but whatever.

Having gone to the first four shows this year, for a brief time, my personal rarity vs. overall rarity for Walk Around The Moon, and Ocean & Butterfly, was 100%/100%. Ha.

What’re your top 3 Batson Sessions songs?

    Mine are:

    1) Drive Me Away
    2) Early Home
    3) Ask (really only an idea/concept, but there’s so much potential here. Also really like Dave’s sarcastic/tongue-in-cheek lyrics)

And ending the main set with The Stone?! Yes please! Such a perfect closer. Really should happen more often...

I've gravitated toward listening to far more D&T than DMB shows the last few years and would happily take an official release... assuming there isn't a SBD already circulating and it doesn't sound like complete dogshit.

Tbh, The Fly sounds a lot like Early Home, and I would actually take that over Early Home.

Yea, The Fly is another sneaky good one, and haha yea good call, it does sound like/remind me of Early Home.

I think I would take Early Home over it though. With Early Home I had that rare but awesome “this feels like a classic” feeling after I heard it for the first time.

30 years ago this week, Peter Griesar made his debut.

For the hardcores or those in the know, did Griesar add much to the band?

I mean if UTTAD and Crash were DMB 1.0. With Griesar, it's the sound of the Beta version of DMB.

We haven't heard Buddy on any of these yet:

    Broken Things
    Gaucho
    Snow Outside
    Dive In
    American Baby
    American Baby Intro
    Everybody Wake Up
    Out of My Hands
    Busted Stuff
    Kit Kat Jam
    I Did It
    Angel
    Mother Father
    Dreaming Tree
    Let You Down
    Cry Freedom
    Pay For What You Get
    Eh Hee
    Bismarck
    Blackjack
    Break For It
    Crazy Easy
    Death on the High Seas
    A Dream So Real
    Good Good Time
    Plastic Girl
    Shotgun

After hearing what they've done with Sweet, I'd be most interested in what he could add to Dreaming Tree, Snow Outside, Shotgun, Crazy Easy, Good Good Time, Dive In, American Baby, Busted Stuff, Dream So Real, and Death on the High Seas. Maybe he could even make Out of My Hands sound interesting

I'm a big fan of the early days. I don't like everything Peter added, but I do like a lot of what he did (Warehouse, Nancies, Two Step to name a few)

But in my opinion, starting from April '93 on, the band got so much better. By August '93, they were the greatest band out there.

I vote Busted Stuff. I know Dave doesn’t like playing this song, but with Tim playing the guitar parts (with a cleaner tone than 2010 hopefully) and Buddy on the jazzy piano… Man, that shit would sound so good.

I’m also dying to catch Dreaming Tree full band. I’d love to hear what Buddy could do on this song, hopefully they break it out this tour with a revamped structure/jam

Blue Water was never the same once Peter Griesar left. Those twelve descending notes at the end made the whole song.

Maybe this is for the unpopular opinions thread, but I've never been a huge fan of '93. It always sounded to me like the band was trying to find their way without the keys, and it wasn't until '94-'95 that they really hit their stride.

Did Peter leave the band due to touring issues or something else?

It's hard to get a good sense of what the band actually sounded like with Peter because there's only one multi-track, and very few AUDs of his time. Our SBDs of Peter are the house mix. In a small club, you don't have to mix or mic Carter or Roi very high as their natural sound filled the room anyway. Peter being 100% plugged in, with no outward natural sound meant he was always mixed very high on the tapes we have to the point where it sounds like his key work is what actually drove the band's sound and sometimes with some of the keyboard sounds it sounded more like the Paul Schaeffer Band. I would love a 1992 audience that sounded as great as a clean, modern tape to get a true sense of what it sounded like to be in a club in 1992 listening to DMB.

From an interview in 2000 (https://nancies.org/news/2000/09/griesar-interview/3/):

    Quote:
So it came as a surprise to many fans when, on March 23, 1993, Peter Griesar played his last show with Dave Matthews Band. There's that nagging question again: Why?

Griesar pauses, assembling his thoughts. He looks tired, far away, as if he's preparing himself for a great effort. With a deep breath, and a bit of sadness, he haltingly explains.

"I was...I was tired. My mom was sick. I was...there was...I felt, like, a breakdown in communication between me and David. Personally and...I have very little patience for that because I'm a personal person. And so I decided...and I wasn't having any fun, and so I decided to stop. And do something else. I wanted what was happening to stop. So I made it stop. I needed it to stop. I had to stop for my own health, for my own sake of well-being. That's all. I left because I needed to grow. That I was my deficit. I needed to grow. I considered that to be my need.

"I was young, I had been through a lot of experiences, this was a really great experience. I had a great time doing it up to that point, and I knew that the joy that I found in it, the joy that I derived from what I was doing was dwindling. It was turning into something else, from my perspective. In this day and age, if it had been another time, a year later, a year before, a week before, a week later, things might have been different. But at the time, I was in the moment, and I thought 'If I don't stop doing this, I'm not going to grow anymore.'

"I'm a good sideman. I know how to make someone look good. I think that's what I did to Dave. I made his guitar playing sound better by mirroring it on the keyboards. And I made Boyd sound better by helping him learn melodic lines and training him into them. By the time I left the band, David learned how to play rhythm guitar and Boyd had learned all the melodic lines and Carter had learned all the backup harmonies. So all of the three jobs that I had were useless. They really were. If there was any intellectual reason that I left, it was that. My time was done, I had done my job. And that's the best job anyone can do.

"[I knew that] the band was much larger than me. That what we were doing was much more important than me, and I knew that, and that my leaving would go almost unnoticed, in a way, in the sense that I would leave on a Tuesday and they would be playing on a Wednesday. And I knew that at the time, I was expecting that. I didn't expect the world to stop. I wasn't quitting the band to make a statement. I wasn't doing it to make a stand. I was doing it to, literally, simply, to duck out. I didn't want to continue under the circumstances because I needed to grow. I'm not much of a regretful person."
